Remember phone calls??Instant conversations in real time? Speaking to a person when you needed to? How very 20th century.?

Today we do things differently. Leaps in technology allow us to exchange a series of WhatsApp messages and emails beforehand, send an invitation for a Zoom meeting two weeks from now, ask three other people to attend, reschedule four times because of clashes, illness or vacation, then abandon the call half-way through because the WiFi is rubbish.

?Oh for the spontaneity and straightforward efficiency of the humble landline telephone.?
