Remember Their Name

Stoic Quote of the Week

The longest-lived and the shortest-lived man, when they come to die, lose one and the same thing. -Marcus Aurelius

What I learned this week:

Last night, I had the honor to be part of one of the most sacred traditions of Texas A&M, Aggie Muster. Aggie Muster is a tradition started over 100 years ago and involves remembering former students who have passed away in the last year. During the ceremony, Ms. Suzanne and I called the names of people that our local Aggie club members wanted to recognize. We took turns calling each person’s name and their class year, and someone would answer, “Here.” Then they would come to the front and light a candle to remember that person. As we read the names, I couldn’t help but think of the military’s similar tradition of a roll call in remembrance of a service member who had passed. I know many police and fire departments follow a similar tradition. What last night reminded me of is that those people are remembered. As long as we remember their name, that person is remembered. But what is the point of it to the person that is gone? They are dead. The memories are for us, the living. The person was important to you or me, and because of that, I remember them. I remember their actions and effects on my life by remembering their name. That memory is what means something to me. It is important that I remember that person, whether it was my grandparents, Wayne and Bertha McGregor and Faye Holliday, or someone I served with, MSG Richard “Fergie” Ferguson. I keep their memories alive for me because of what they meant to me in my life. Remember, you, too, will die. What will you do or be to have an effect on people’s lives that they will want to remember and say your name?

Planning thought of the week:

The saying goes something like, ‘the best-laid plans of mouse and men,’ That means that no plan ever survives the first action we take because a plan is a guess, sometimes a good guess and sometimes a very bad guess. No matter how it turns out, having a plan gives you a point to leap forward from when it is right or fall back to a known point when it is wrong. Never underestimate the importance of having a plan.

Business idea I heard about or thought of:

I think side hustle seems to be my general theme here in the last several editions. This one is no different and is aimed at gamers. There is a website called PlaytestCloud that pays people to test video games. Yep, you read that right; get paid to test out video games as a side gig. This isn’t just beer money, either. Once you are accepted, after passing the qualification test, you can make between $9-13 for a 15 min test. That’s some pretty good beer money. May even help out with the rent or car payment.

Veteran opportunity of the week:

Meritorious is hosting an interactive virtual networking experience for veterans in tech on 17 May. This is a great opportunity to network with other veterans in the tech industry, but they promise several CEOs and CIOs from the industry will be in attendance. Learn more here .

Someone I met this week:

Last year, Jason and I linked up via a LinkedIn connection, and we hit it off right away. Jason is another Army vet who uses what he learned in the Army to help businesses have more success, and his business is doing so well that he decided to expand and grow. He started the Strategic Advisor Board (SAB). A group of 10 highly successful business leaders with expertise in all business areas to help their clients have great success. There is always someone on the SAB who has dealt with the exact or similar problem as their clients.
