I kept my childhood diaries. I read them aloud to mortify myself and make my children double over in laughter. Some lines....I can't read aloud....too awkward and painful of memories. And I do not embarrass easily. I love being on stage, am comfortable improvising and making mistakes and finding creative ways to recover. But, oh, boy, there is something about being confronted with your past self that is sobering! But I keep dusting those unicorn laced, lock missing, sticker-adorned diaries and perusing them for insight to my origin story. I cannot help but smile at the germinating soul I was becoming. One thing I felt sure of, certainly, I am not that same girl. I am so much more nuanced and mature now. My confident thoughts were dashed by my daughter who laughed and said, "Mom, you haven't changed a bit!"
Hopes dashed! And with reflection I suppose it is not so bad to realize our unique traits, gifts and talents surface early. And just like I did not realize aspects of myself that my children notice, I have found as I interview and create video documentaries of all sorts of people, that so often, the story you intend to tell is just the beginning. And the roots and memories give insight to the present. And you really have a challenging time unearthing your own legacy wisdom. I love the rewarding process of vetting the right questions and giving opportunity for a person to answer and reflect on their life and lessons learned with the right prompt.
I came across a line in my childhood diary where I wrote,
"Remember is the most important word."
Young Shannon had wisdom beyond her years and perhaps knew her purpose on this earth early on. I am on a mission to help people be remembered. I believe it is the most important thing we can do.
It is common that folks do not realize they want or need their life story documented. Nor, do most realize the value in getting support to create lasting representations of who they are and where they came from. Our fleeting lives are gifts that have ripple effect repercussions into the future and I am on a mission to, like the one starfish at a time, thrown back into the sea, video document one extraordinary story and human at a time.
