Much gratitude that you have tuned in, most welcomed to this 6th edition. How is your longevity journey playing out?. I hope all is great and everyone is in robust health. During occasions where i am blessed to be the attending Anaesthesiologist for couples during a caesarian section , i am always amazed by how the new life born to proud parents adopt so quickly to the life outside of the womb. The ones in robust health start to bond with parents. However, there are a few unfortunate new borns who through abnormality in their cardio-respiratory functions, fail to adopt to the new life and spend a lot of energy on the work of breathing. The point i would like to highlight is that whenever there is deviation from health , a lot of energy is focused on survival instead of discovering innovative solutions to humanity's challenges.
Longevity refers to the ability to live a long life , often exceeding the average life span for a species . It is distinct from life expectancy , which statistically measures the average years remaining at a certain age. Factors influencing longevity includes genetics, life style choices [such as diet and exercise], and environmental conditions. Healthy longevity emphasizes maintaining physical, cognitive , and social well-being throughout life, potentially extending lifespan significantly through proactive health measures.

Lifespan and Health span are distinct concepts. Lifespan refers to the total numbers of years a person lives , while Health span indicates the duration of life spent in good health [Quality of life years], free from chronic diseases.
Although modern advancements have increased lifespan, many individuals experience significant years burdened by illnesses, resulting in a healthspan that is often shorter than lifespan - estimated at a gap of around nine years on average. Ideally, the goal is to maximise both lifespan and health span for better quality of life.

. Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight [BMI 18.5 to 25] reduces the risk of chronic diseases.

Cancer significantly threatens healthy longevity by reducing life expectancy and quality of life[Health span]. Diagnoses at younger ages often results in substantial years lost ; for instance patients diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 40 may lose around 33 years of life expectancy, while those diagnosed at 80 lose about 7 years due to competing mortality risk.
Different cancer types impact healthy longevity variably ; lung and stomach cancers are associated with highest years lost, while melanoma and breast cancers typically result in less loss. However, early or late diagnosis will have corresponding impact in healthspan. Moreover, socioeconomic factors can exacerbate these effects, as individuals in lower deprivation groups often experience greater life years lost.
Colorectal cancer[CRC] significantly impacts life expectancy , with median survival rates around 5.13 years for colon cancer and 4.67 years for rectal cancer. Early stage diagnosis [I or II] lead to better outcomes, with 57% of stage I patients surviving for at least 10 years, compared to only 7% for stage IV.
As cancer is the second highest threat to longevity following cardiovascular diseases ,a lot can be done to expedite early diagnosis and treatment. Early detection and effective treatment are crucial for improving survival rates and health outcomes.
In this era of AI, a lot more can be done to screen, prevent and treat cancer ,thereby turning the tide from it being the second cause of mortality. The diagnosis of cancer should not be a life changing event when AI intervention through prediction, early diagnosis and efficient , effective timeous treatment and follow up.
