REMEMBER FOLKS – This is about the Greenport Opera House!

By Danny McCarthy

The County Review had this:

????Greenport Opera House ?- early 1900s. Main & Bay. Note: The Bank building at the time was only one-story high. Post office was on corner, several other store in the same building. Today it is all a large parking lot. {That info came from a March 2, 1984 The Peconic Bay Shopper).

????“Inside Paradise Sweets, circa 1924. George Mellas, Pro. , later destroyed by fire. “Ah! The wood that burns!” It’s such a true tragedy!

???Main Road, Greenport, in the 1930s and Hochheiser’s Five & Ten.”

Some even more out-standing self-promoting by me being me to go ahead and add items of information about Metro Theatre, Paradise 29, 1966 Sweets & Hochheiser’s Five & Ten!

WELL HERE WE GO ABOUT

GREEPORT OPERA HOUSE

????RESOURCE{s} USED …

I WENT “write-ahead” and was sure to double-check the Suffolk Historic Newspapers website and I located the keyword section after downloading the website with Greenport Opera House. I was able to “get/find” 14 matches for Greenport Opera House.

Yeah! I KNOW … I’M REPEATING MYSELF …

The Suffolk County news dated January 20, 1905:

????“There is going to be an oyster opening contest for the championship of Long Island, Connecticut and Rhode Island in the Greenport Opera House, on the 25th."

South Side Signal dated February 4, 1905 had something to “dig!”:

????“An oyster opening contest for the championship of Long Island, Rhode Island and Connecticut took place on Thursday evening in the Greenport Opera House. … Thomas Verity, of Greenport, and Adam Krause, of Sayville, were the third contestants. Verity winning. No time taken. The 250 oysters when opened made approximately a gallon.”

?The County Review that was dated March 17, 1905:

?????“Thanks to the committee for an invitation to a dance to be given this evening at the Greenport Opera House by the Stirling Athletic club.”

???Sag-Harbor Express dated August30, 1906:

????“King’s String and Brass Band of ten pieces will run dances all the afternoon and will give a Grand Tournament Ball in the evening at the Greenport Opera?House on Sept. 12th."

???The Long-Islander dated August 31, 1906 announced the facts that the:

????“… King’s String and Brass band of ten pieces will run dances all the afternoon and will give a grand tournament ball game in the evening at the Greenport Opera House, September 12.?…”

I’M ON A ROLL AGAIN …

YOU’LL GET IT FOR SURE …:

The County Review dated Friday June 28, 1907 talked about having a good place for a good skate:

????“The Greenport Opera House has been leased for two months by a Mr. Edwards, of New London, who will open it as a roller skating rink. The grand opening will be on this Saturday evening."

????Sag-Harbor Express {stet} that was dated February 14, 1916 scored for sure!:

????At the Greenport Opera House, the Greenport High School went to defeat before Cutchogue in one of the most exciting basketball games of the season. The score was 35 to 40.The Greenport High second team was also defeated by Cutchogue’s second team 37 to 26.”

The Watchman dated July 7, 1938 ran a column titled YOUR MAIN STREET AND MINE by AL TRAHERN:

????{Artist/Painter} Whitney Hubbard informed us:

?“… Because of the many theatrical people who summered at Greenport and nearby, more than one future Broadway hit had its tryout in the local Greenport ‘or a’ house over the post office. One of these was ‘Quincy’ Adams.’ He ‘composed ‘The Free Lance’ while vacationing at Greenport. William Gillette studied his most famous role, ‘Sherlock Holmes. …

????… “Artist Hubbard told of Corse Payton’s first visit to Greenport when he presented his own drama of heart throbs {stet} entitled, ‘Over the Hills to the Poor House,’ which incidentally was one of the best rural dramas ever written, and when Corse presented this drama at the original Greenport Opera House, I’ll venture to say that if there wasn’t a guy in the audience that didn’t cry his head off when the sweet ‘little old lady’ was hustled off to the poor house by her own son, then that guy didn’t belong in Greenport. Corse Payton boasted that he was ‘the best actor in America’ – whether he was the best bad actor or the near best bad actor has never been determined, for the reason that all theatres where he appeared were not big enough to accommodate his followers. …”

????The Long Island Traveler Mattituck Watchman dated February 14, 1952 in the standard Fifty Years Ago column was so sure to PRINT this since it was actually mentioning a true hit:

?????“‘The Stolen Will’ was presented at the Greenport Opera House.”

https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/stolen-offered-big-chill-you-dan-mccarthy/

???The Long Island Traveler Mattituck Watchman that was dated July 14, 1966 had the usual FIFTY YEARS AGO COLUMN which happened to say this among its listings:

????“The Greenport Opera house, used for a number for the showing of motion pictures{,} had closed due to lack of patronage.”

THIS IS SHOCKING {!!!}:

????The Long Island Traveler Mattituck Watchman that was dated December 29, 1966:

????“Greenport High School defeated the Klu Klux Klan basketball team of East Moriches by a score of 42-21. The game was played in the Greenport Opera House.”???

??????The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman THAT IS DATED February 10, 1972?just happened to include a photo courtesy of the Stirling Historical Society AND WHAT WAS SO TERRIFIC WAS THAT THERE WAS A write-up lengthier than just a standard-sized caption that usually accompanies photos in newspapers to coincide only to the size of the actual photo. THERE WAS MORE INFORMATION! That’s what a newspaper IS ALL ABOUT! Yes! PHOTOS! ~ BUT ADDED INFORMATION to accompany - since knowledge is gained by further expression! – “Picture that thought!”

????That February 10, 1972 issue read and I “write-fully quote”:

????“Greenport Opera House – As It Was

This fine stately edifice, the Greenport Opera House, stood on the corner of what is now the Valley National Bank parking lot. For years Greenport’s Post Office occupied the corner with high steps in front. Boots and shoes were sold in stores fronting of Main Street, and some years later, the Women’s Exchange, sold cakes and pies on Bay Avenue side. The huge second floor was used for entertainments, basketball games, and dances. In late year{,} the space served of the Hobby House {-} a {childrens’} play are. Through kindness of the Stirling Historical Society, we are told that a most delightful banquet was held just sixty-nine years ago, (Feb. 10, 1903)

By the Empire Council, No. 28, Jr O U . M., and the order of dances were: The Grand Match, The Lancers, Waltz, Quadrille, Varsovienne, Berlin Polka, {etcetera, etcetera, etcetera}! Ah! to be in Greenport in those good old days.”

ALL RIGHT – ALL RIGHT! – {OR HALF-LEFT IN POLITICS} GOLDIN FURNTURE has an outstandingly gorgeous place to “re-ceipt” oneself in the auditorium within if that was allowed -?but GOLDIN FURNITURE is NOT GREENPORT OPERA HOUSE{!!!} Below just for the sake of is a link carrying the GOLDIN FURNITURE website - & when you download the link – You’ll see that complete difference we got by the roofs of both the Greenport Opera House and GOLDIN FURNITURE:

https://goldinfurniture.com/

AND! I DID LOCATE HELP – “The Greenport Auditorium was built in 1894. The architect was a Mr. Flack. Seating was provided for 300 in the orchestra and 100 in the balcony. It closed in 1939. Since the 1960’s it has operated as Goldin Furniture store.” That was located from the cinematreasures website: https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/40702

THE HAMLET OF SOUTHOLD IN THE TOWN OF SOUTHOLD had the SOUTHOLD OPERA HOUSE:
