Remember The Climb

Remember The Climb

Looking for a job is hard and right now, it’s harder than ever.

Jump on LinkedIn and you won’t have to scroll for long before you see a post from someone highlighting just how tough the experience can be.

  • A lack of response to an application
  • Regularly being ghosted by recruiters
  • Receiving no feedback after interviews
  • Roles being withdrawn at offer stage.

It’s brutal. But if this is the situation you find yourself in then trust me, (apologies in advance for rolling out this old adage but it’s worth repeating) this too shall pass.

Yeah I know, I can almost hear you rolling your eyes but the truth is, it really will.

The right opportunity will come. The right recruiter, TA or hiring manager will find you and you’ll be saying yes to the right job offer sometime soon. And when you do, I want you to remember what it felt like to be on the other side of the fence.

Because every poor candidate experience can be traced back to someone forgetting what it felt like to be out of work and things will only change if we all take responsibility to remember and subsequently, act. ?

You are in a unique position to empathise with candidates and influence change. When you land your next role make sure you bang the drum for a more transparent, respectful, and communicative recruitment process. Advocate for clear communication with candidates, feedback after interviews, and in general, a more human approach to recruitment.

By asking questions, sharing your experiences and suggesting improvements, you can help to ensure that the recruitment process becomes less daunting in the future and in turn help businesses to adopt practices that treat candidates with the respect they deserve.

So, once you land that next job do me a favour. Remember the climb. Don’t forget the struggles you’ve faced and the way they made you feel.

Use them as a catalyst for change.

The End
