Remember the baud?

One baud is one bit transmitted per second.

And today I was pondering/remembering my first internet connection when. I lived in Australia — it was late 1994.

And I remember getting excited hearing that special dial tone and the joy of finally getting connected at the speed of 2,800 baud.

And here I am today in Singapore downloading stuff at 200 Mbytes (effective 1.6 Giga bauds, since a byte equals 8 bits. That’s nearly 60,000 TIMES the speed in 1994.

Hard to contemplate.

Just like today’s news that Apple became the first company on the planet to be valued at over $2 Trillion.
