In this month's newsletter we present 'Crawler handling' on construction machinery.

Many earth-moving machines such as excavators are radio-controlled with 2 levers/joysticks, each required to manually control a single crawler.

For the same application, a single cross-track joystick can be used if the on-board electronics can combine the speed components of the left and right crawler.

This is a characteristic feature of REMdevice's MOVE platform: performing calculations to allow smooth movement in all directions, even when the crawler is moving crosswise on a ramp. In addition, the MOVE platform allows the cruise speed to be adjusted, which is useful in bumpy areas.


This system is applied for different applications: grass cutting machines on banks, roads, canals, or excavators or small robots for cleaning solar panels.

So what are the advantages?

  • Use of a single cross joystick instead of two levers.
  • Use of software capable of parametrically calculating the angular speed of the individual crawlers to simulate the direction required by the individual cross joysticks.
  • Additional possibility of two types of adjustment: max full scale and offset adjustment to compensate for shunting.

Finally, with Remdevice's MOVE, there is no need to have both single crawler control (two single-axis levers) and two combined crawlers (cross joysticks) on board the radio control unit.
