What caught our attention.

In October, Amazon plans to run beta tests for Sponsored Display Video Ads in 11 marketplaces - including the US, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, Brazil, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates. The exact date when the feature will be available is currently unknown though.?

??? In our experience, Sponsored Brand Videos are working very well, showing a top performance. No wonder Amazon is now expanding the video format to other ad types.

Amazon is expanding its advertising options on various marketplaces worldwide. In Belgium, sponsored ads and DSP will be possible in both French and Dutch from November 30, 2022 onwards. In South Africa and Colombia, advertising on Amazon is expected to be possible from the end of April 2023. In Chile and Nigeria, the launch has been set for the end of July 2023.?

??? The launch dates for Amazon advertising in the African and South American countries are at the same time the launch dates for the Amazon marketplaces in these countries. Although Amazon has not yet confirmed to open up marketplaces in South Africa, Colombia, Chile, and Nigeria, this seems to confirm the rumors.

Amazon is currently testing a function on the US marketplace that makes it possible to direct traffic from Amazon to one's own website. By creating Sponsored Brand Ads that direct customers to a "Buy with Prime" page in the Brand Store, an order can be placed on both Amazon and the brand's own website. The new feature has only been available as an invite-based beta.

??? Amazon pushes its "Buy with Prime" program - at its own expense, since the orders placed on other websites are lost revenue for Amazon. Is this a reaction to Shopify's Anti-”Buy with Prime” strategy?

It is now easier to create new creatives in Sponsored Brand Spotlight campaigns. These no longer have to be designed from scratch and, most importantly, include valuable historical data. However, this option only seems to apply to new campaigns.

For the U.S. marketplace, Amazon now offers enhanced and more detailed insights into customer reviews in the "Amazon Product Opportunity Explorer". The "Customer Review" tab shows excerpts from positive and negative reviews as well as the influence on star ratings. Like a sentiment analysis, the extension indicates the weighting of the influence of each characteristic on the rating.

???We find: An extremely exciting look at reviews and a valuable data source.

It seems that Amazon’s Spanish and French marketplaces have recently started allowing videos to be replaced in existing Sponsored Brand Video campaigns. Thanks to the update, campaigns no longer have to be created from scratch - however, this only applies to campaigns that were created before the beginning of September this year.

??? This will? take a lot of manual work off when creating campaigns.

Amazons Announces Date of Second Prime Day 2022

No alt text provided for this image

The “Prime Early Access Sale”, a two-day deal event exclusively for Amazon Prime members, is set for October 11 and 12, 2022, and is scheduled to take place simultaneously in 15 countries. Participating Amazon markets include the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, China, and Turkey. The shopping events, which are designed to get customers in the mood for the holiday shopping season, will thus start earlier than ever this year.??

??? This fits the current consumer mood: People want discounts since they have to pay more attention to money due to inflation and higher costs. In our Amazon Shopper Report 2022 we found out that 23% of Amazon customers intentionally wait for deal events and even actively save money for them.

Amazon Expands Email Marketing Capabilities

Amazon sellers will have the opportunity to reach a larger number of customers directly, using free email marketing with the "Tailored Audiences" tool. According to Amazon, partners will receive information on click-through rates, number of orders, and opt-out rates. This will allow sellers to reach not only brand followers when sending marketing emails, but also other customers, such as repeat customers, new customers, and customers with high online shopping spend. The plan is to launch in the U.S. in early 2023.

??? This is an extremely important step. Especially if brands are to understand amazon as a D2C channel, there have to be more options for interaction. In the end, this will be good for Amazon as well as the brands will be bringing customers back to the platform. It just has to be made sure that these campaigns are not abused (e.g. asking for ratings, linking to other pages, etc.).

Amazon supposedly wants to conquer the Japanese healthcare market

Following the purchase of medical services provider One Medical, the failed acquisition of healthcare company Signify Health, and the announced discontinuation of Amazon Care, Amazon is now apparently planning an online system for medicine deliveries in Japan . Under consideration is a platform where patients can find information about prescribed medications and order them. Amazon would not operate the pharmacies but only provide the online system. "This could be a turning point for the country's brick-and-mortar pharmacies," Nikkei Asia commented on the plans. Amazon itself has not yet confirmed the media reports.?

??? Our Amazon Shopper Report 2022 shows: 66% of EU5 Amazon customers would order prescription drugs from “Amazon Pharmacy” - let’s see if this will be the case in Japan as well.

Prime Video upgrades result in record Number of New Prime Subscriptions

More sports and the record-breaking production of a new fantasy series by Amazon made the headlines recently. According to Amazon , a record number of newly opened Prime memberships occurred over a 3-hour period during the initial broadcast of "Thursday Night Football.” It was the first weeknight game of the season for the U.S. National Football League (NFL) and broadcasted exclusively by Prime Video. In addition, Amazon attracted more than 25 million viewers on the first day of the launch of its new TV series "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power".

???On that note, it is worth mentioning: Our Amazon Shopper Report 2022 confirms the relevance of Amazon's entertainment offering. For consumers, video streaming is one of the most important benefit of using Amazon Prime - contributing to Amazon’s lock-in effect.

Updates: E-Commerce.

Walmart sees spike in new sellers after changing its registration process

No alt text provided for this image

Walmart has simplified the process for seller registration on its platform. It is now possible for brands and online retailers to become sellers by providing only the name and contact information of their company. Other questions, such as ones related to sales figures and product catalog size, have been removed from the process. In addition, the so-called "Business Verification" replaces the initial registration and is now the only threshold left for potential sellers on the platform. The changes have led to a veritable rush of registrations in recent weeks - with currently four times more new sellers signing up on Walmart every day than before. Thanks to this boom, the U.S. online marketplace seems to be slowly reaching the same number of daily registrations as its competitor Amazon.

??? Would be interesting to know the absolute figures in comparison - Marketplace Pulse estimates around 5,000 new seller registrations per week on Walmart. Actually, Walmart's numbers should be bigger than Amazon's if they want to gain market share.

Shopify warns against Amazon's "Buy with Prime"

No alt text provided for this image

Since June of this year, Shopify has been testing Amazon's new "Buy with Prime" service, which allows FBA merchants to offer Amazon Prime as a shipping option via a button on their own online shop’s website. During checkout, the add-on uses data from a customer's respective Amazon account to process the order. Shopify is now critical of "Buy with Prime" , saying that the installation of the external link will remove Shopify's protection against fraudulent orders and that data theft and false invoices cannot be ruled out. Amazon denies the accusations and points to the high security standards of its own service. According to reports, Shopify may also have issued the warning presumably merely with the aim of promoting the use of its own checkout and payment service "Shop Pay."?

??? At the same time, Amazon is expanding the options for "Buy with Prime", making the program even more attractive. Another indication of the competition between the two e-commerce giants that has been underway for some time already.

The U.S. Expect Boom in Online Grocery Services

No alt text provided for this image

The number of online grocery purchases in the U.S. increased by more than 20% last year compared to the previous year, according to Insider Intelligence. According to the report, about half of the U.S. population purchased groceries online and had them delivered in 2021. These purchases occurred primarily at Walmart, followed by Amazon and Kroger. By 2025, sales are expected to double to $243 billion in conjunction with an expansion of services from Amazon Fresh, Uber Eats and similar companies.?

??? Our Amazon Shopper Report 2022 shows that this trend has yet to take root in Europe; nearly 60% of shoppers on Amazon's European marketplaces do not use the platform for grocery shopping. However, this is also due to the low availability of services such as Amazon Fresh.
