Mark Rutte, the new Secretary General of NATO as of October 1, 2024, was born on February 14, 1967, in The Hague, Netherlands. He comes from a large family, being the youngest of seven children. His father worked for a trading company, and his mother was a secretary. Although Rutte once dreamed of becoming a pianist, he pursued a career in history, earning a master’s degree from Leiden University.
Rutte’s political career began with the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) in the 1990s. He initially worked for Unilever in human resources while remaining politically active, rising through the ranks of the VVD. His government service started with positions as Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, and Minister of Education, Culture, and Science. In 2006, Rutte became the leader of the VVD, and he was appointed Prime Minister of the Netherlands in 2010, a position he held for 14 years until 2024. Rutte became one of the longest-serving European leaders, navigating numerous crises, including the global financial crisis and the war in Ukraine.
Mark Rutte is known for his pragmatism, consensus-building, and ability to maintain coalitions. As NATO Secretary General, he is tasked with addressing defense spending commitments, supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression, and navigating tensions within the alliance. Rutte is also a strong supporter of Ukraine, especially since the 2014 Malaysia Airlines crash, where most of the victims were Dutch citizens. He was instrumental in forming coalitions to supply military aid to Ukraine.
