The Lesson of the Internment of Japanese-Americans During WWII
In the 1940s Jeanne Wakatsuki and her family were living in California when Pearl Harbor was bombed.
Her family was uprooted from Long Beach and placed in the Manzanar internment camp in the High Sierra of California. In total, 120,000 Japanese suffered from similar treatment.
This action was done in the name of security; the fear was that people like Jeanne’s family would sabotage America’s war efforts. We are seeing similar anti-immigrant sentiment today.
Her story embodies several important lessons for us all:
- Good people can do bad things under the stress of war. Thus, imprisonment based on race or religion could happen again.
- In the face of injustice, people adjusted, survived, and eventually thrived. The human spirit is, after all, resilient and hardy.
- If people had the opportunity to get to know strangers who are seemingly very different, they’d probably discover that they have much in common.
