Uniting changemakers in the fight for human rights and climate justice in the clothing industry. Take action ??
Meet Susan!
Susan Rockefeller is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, artist, and conservationist, and one of Remake's supporters, serving as a galvanizing force behind Remake's movement to make fashion a force for good.
At Remake we believe in the power of storytelling to reconnect our community to the makers of our clothes. As an award winning filmmaker, which stories have you been most proud to bring to the world and why?
There are many, but a few stand out to me that have created awareness about issues that are deeply important to me.?Mission of Mermaids?is a love letter to the ocean. I produced and directed it after working on a long format film called?A Sea Change?on ocean acidification, and had wanted to make a short format film linking the myth of the mermaid to ocean health, using it as a platform at festivals to talk about ocean issues. I was able to have ocean mermaid ambassadors work with the film around the world and had wonderful partnerships with brands (Girard Perregaux was one in particular) that allowed global reach.
?
Food for Thought, Food for Life?is another short film I made with a poetic look at regenerative farming and the food crisis. There is also?Making the Crooked Straight, which is about a doctor living in Ethiopia working to save the lives of some of the poorest people afflicted with curvature of the spine and other illnesses.?
?
Other films that I was a co-producer on include Kiss the Ground, Fantastic Fungi, and Louverture films?Capernaum,?Gunda,?Strong Island, and Hale County This Morning, This Evening—all of which tell stories that evoke empathy for others from all walks of life as well as empathy and compassion for the well-being and ethical treatment of animals.

What does the discovery process look like for the social impact entrepreneurs and conscious products and brands that you showcase in your digital magazine?Musings??

I have a great team working with me. We focus on companies involved in food system change, green chemistry, advocacy, ocean health issues and more. We do not participate in advertising—every company or individual we feature has been directly vetted by us or by one of our nonprofit partners. We recently announced that?Musings?was acquired by Collectively, a Blue Horizon initiative, which also owns LIVEKINDLY, a digital platform focused on sustainable, plant-based living.

As a lifelong environmentalist, what about Remake’s mission to center pay equity and climate justice in the clothing industry resonates with you??
People need to understand the labor issues around fashion and the entire supply chain from dirt to shirt. The fast fashion industry, like fast food, needs to be reimagined and reconstructed in a way that cares for our soil, our farmers, our manufacturers and the women who are primarily making our clothes around the world. Remake’s vision is clear and understandable and my hope is that more people will purchase less, buy secondhand, buy for longterm use, and think about all the things in our lives that were made by hardworking people. There are many all over the world whose livelihoods depend on this exchange and we as a community need to find ways to support those most vulnerable as a result of the global economy of fast fashion and fast food. Remake gives us a road map and builds vital awareness that is crucial for our common future.?

What advice do you have for our changemaking community on how to combat eco-anxiety??
Start with where you feel you can contribute most—everyone has a role to play. Most importantly, the changemaking community of Remake needs to honor their own health and wellbeing and understand that there is great freedom in essentialism. The consumption culture is not a restorative one; we must move from consumption to creativity and find ways to make meaning, find your community, and lead with love. The older I get, the more I value family, art and nature, and try to leave this world a better, more loving, and regenerative place.?I believe that we protect what we love, and each person can find that sweet spot using talent, time or their hard earned treasure or philanthropic?dollars to make a difference.?When we know what is at stake, we want to live more simply. With eco anxiety, look to deepen friendships and find the humor and beauty in daily life, and be kind to yourself and those around you.?At the end of the day love is everything and we will be remembered most by the way we treated those around us.
