Are Religious & Cultural Issues Important in Divorce Mediation?

Are Religious & Cultural Issues Important in Divorce Mediation?

Absolutely.

Ontario is a proud second home to hundreds of thousands of newcomers, temporary workers, immigrants, refugees and international students.

Whether they are here temporarily or permanently, many of them form relationships and have children here.

In some cases, they also separate and divorce here. When they do, their family law journey is influenced by their own heritage.? This may come in many forms including their religious obligations, their ethnic values, their linguistic vulnerabilities and the influence of their extended family, local or abroad.

As a Divorce Mediator, I bring an openness, curiosity and respect for the unique set of features of every spouse and family.? I also am mindful of the potential biases and opinions that may creep into my work. Each spouse’s personal history, heritage, culture, religion, traditions and background inform how I help my clients.

One of the greatest joys of serving as a Divorce Mediator is my ability to learn, understand and honour the uniqueness of every family - in the intersection of multiculturalism and divorce.?I am constantly striving to increase my awareness of the nuances found in religion and culture during divorce and its implications for parenting plans, religious obligations, pre-marriage agreements and the role of the extended family.

Divorce Mediation is not just a dispute resolution mechanism.? It is a means to customize solutions for the needs of the specific family, which is why I enjoy this work so much.
