Reliance, Recommendations, Masterclasses
Nope, this is not a recommendation to buy the Reliance stock, but it may not be such a bad idea to buy one!
Unless one have been living under the rock, there is no way, one would have missed the gargantuan fund raise by the Reliance. It was a master class in marketing, fundraising and financial engineering.
Marketing and Fundraising
One would be really naive to assume or think that Google invested last, yet at the valuation as Facebook who invested first. Probably, the announcements were structured in such a way to start with Facebook and end with Google on the day of the Reliance AGM. Raising, these much money itself is a huge deal that too with marquee investors is another big feat but to pull all off these and synchronize with the AGM without missing a beat in the middle of the global pandemic! That is some serious, fine and best of the best top notch team in action to strategize and execute!
The Financial Engineering
Well, I would pay some serious money, if someone could explain this article and make me understand. Nope, it is not that article is complex, it is just my silly simple mind who is having a tough time to comprehend all of it!
Impact on Indian Private Equity
Private Equity in India (in a way is still in its infancy)or rather been tumultuous. (Remember MTR Foods) However, all that would definitely change. An interesting article on how this fund raise would be the harbinger of things to happen in Indian private equity.
The Origin Story
Like all super hero stories, even with successful businesses, it is important to understand the origin story. The best way to understand the origin story of Reliance is to read "The Polyester Prince" if you can get a copy of it. (Nope, not the Ambani and Sons)(I have no idea, Why I was reminded of a dialogue by the character Gerri, a lawyer in the third Episode of second season of Succession; If you know, you know)
Alternatively, you can read these two part articles, Reliance: Origins and From Oil to Jio The links in the articles are interesting. It would be apt to say, these articles are a masterclass themselves on how to write good well researched articles, present a point of view and provide perspectives.
I am also too tempted and can't resist but recommend to watch this movie Guru by Maniratnam
