Is Reliance Jio 4G the real deal? Can it deliver on the “Big” promise? India's waiting!

Sometimes, things seem too good to be true. Recent Jio 4G launch is one such case. But, what Jio has set out to achieve is something that’s close to my heart – which is: “Connecting the Unconnected” and unshackling information for people who’ve been longing for it. I am optimistic that Jio will deliver on its promise, not because I am an ex-Jio employee, but because I sincerely believe that its success could take India a few years ahead. Connecting all (or most) Indians to internet will unshackle information for the ones currently living in walled gardens, and will enable them to participate in defining our country’s direction. It has the potential to transform India in ways we can’t imagine at this point. There have never been so many connected young folks (over half a billion), with such an access to information and with such an opportunity in the entire history of our planet – this is really powerful. There’s absolutely no precedent to this! It could well be history in the making.

Conclusion based on my observations so far:

It’s too early to say whether Jio is going to be able to deliver on its promise of superior internet experience and customer service. But whether Jio succeeds or not, it has reset customers’ expectations from all carriers, who will need to pull their socks up! Jio has already thrown the cat among the pigeons. The disruption has been initiated and consumers are going to benefit in either case, just like they did when Reliance came out with Monsoon Hungama 16 years ago, making incoming calls free and reducing call rates by over 15X across operators!

There’s a lot of excitement with Jio Launch, people are wanting to trust Reliance Jio to deliver. However, seems like Jio is overwhelmed with the demand and will need to really pick up its game to ensure a great customer experience. Next few months are going to decide how “Brand Jio” will establish itself amongst Indian consumers. It’s got a great start, I sincerely hope they won’t let it go!

Wishing Mukesh Ambani and the team all the very best!
