Reliable Cruise Terminal Operations: Miami, FL

The Port of Miami is known as the Cruise Capital of the Word with world-renowned cruise and cargo facilities.

History of the Area

The major seaport is located in Biscayne Bay at the mouth of the Miami River in Miami, Florida. It was first established in 1895 when landowners Julia Tuttle, William Tuttlem and Mary Brickell persuaded American Industrialist Henry Flagler to extend his Florida East Coast Railroad to the south and build a port city. The first passenger train reached Miami in 1896, and the city of 300 residents was then incorporated.

Following this, in 1897 Flager dredged a 12-foot channel from Cape Florida to Miami to create what is today known as PortMiami and began regular passenger service between Miami and Key West. His Peninsular and Occidental (P&O) Steamship Company later began the first regular shipping service between Miami, Granada, and Nassau. After the boom that occurred following World War II, expansion continued to improve the port’s shipping access and growth.

About PortMiami

The port is Miami-Dade County’s second largest contributor to the?local economy, behind tourism, contributing $43 billion annually and supporting more than 334,500 jobs in South Florida. It works with major cruise lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Virgin Cruises, MSC Cruises and Disney Cruise Lines to take passengers to a wide variety of destinations including the Eastern and Western Caribbean, Mexico, Key West, South America, and beyond.
