Yesterday we had a scare of potential ransomware at a client, so for Delta Friday we reviewed a Ransomware Response procedure.
In the movie Million Dollar Baby, Clint Eastwood growls at Hillary Swank to, "Protect yourself at all times."
It still gives me chills, as the one time she didn't was life ending.
Most ransomware procedures are in the wrong order with no gotchas or requirements to start or follow-up afterward.
Spending days or weeks on forensics while the business is shutdown is foolish. The cause is always either user-initiated malware often from phishing or insecure remote access and passwords.
You make an announcement, and everyone should know to disconnect from the Internet or network to stop the ransomware spread and data loss.
Then you start your response plan which should already be prepared and tested an annual drill.
