A Relentless Advocate for Patients and Team: Meet Charlene Nelson Romero

Charlene Nelson Romero is a Care Coordinator at South DeKalb JenCare Senior Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia. She was nominated by her colleague Center Medical Director?Esther Ufot for her?unwavering dedication, problem-solving mindset, and deep commitment to patient care.?

Charlene is known for never backing down from a challenge. “She never says no or ‘I can’t do it,’ no matter the ask,” shares Esther. “She understands the urgency of STAT requests and ensures seamless communication.” Her great relationships with other medical centers and professionals make the referrals process smoother and more efficient.???

Her impact goes beyond routine responsibilities—she goes the extra mile to ensure patients receive timely and effective care. Esther recalls a remarkable moment when Charlene stepped in to make a difference: “I had a patient who needed a blood transfusion on a Friday afternoon. I wasn’t confident that the hematologist could see him in time and thought he might need to go to the ER. But not Charlene—she reached out, got the doctor’s office to schedule the patient that same day, and personally called the patient to reroute him from the ER to the doctor’s office.”?

Charlene embodies compassion, urgency, and problem-solving—whether it's overcoming financial barriers, securing transportation, or advocating for patients, she finds solutions. “For Charlene, this is not just a job. It’s her passion,” Esther adds.?
