CONVERSATION STARTER

Sora release date. OpenAI’s text-to-video tool Sora wowed the AI community when it was previewed last month with an array of astonishing example videos generated using a variety of prompts. Now it has been confirmed that we will see a launch date for Sora later this year.

The launch date could mean a collision course with the US election, which many experts already fear will be impacted by AI deep-fakes. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Mira Murati? - Open AI’s Chief Technology Officer – admitted that is indeed a concern ahead of the launch.

Murati’s interview with the WSJ also threw up further issues when she was vague on the details of where Sora’s training data was sourced from. Interviewer Joanna Stern certainly seemed unimpressed when asking whether videos from YouTube and Instagram were utilised for training and Murati simply responded with; “I’m not sure, I’m not confident about it”.

The comments will add further fuel to the fire regarding the legality of training data. Earlier this year, in a written submission to the UK House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee, OpenAI stated; “it would be impossible to train today’s leading AI models without using copyrighted materials”.

STORIES TO KEEP YOUR EYE ON

First look at Apple’s LLM. Apple researchers have published their findings for ‘MM1’, a groundbreaking family of multimodal AI models designed to merge visual and language comprehension. The research provides us with a glimpse into Apple’s AI plans and reveals MM1's benchmarking results to be competitive with leading multimodal models like GPT-4V and Gemini Pro. The paper didn’t disclose specific applications of MM1 but was described as “just the beginning” by Senior Research Engineer, Brandon McKinzie.

Microsoft and NVIDIA partner on AI healthcare. Healthcare providers, medical device developers, and biotechnology companies all stand to benefit from a new initiative to bring together Microsoft Azure with NVIDIA’s MONAI (Medical Open Network for AI), to accelerate the modeling, validation, deployment, and evaluation of medical imaging AI models at scale.

TikTok to power OpenAI? Legislation against Chinese-owned Tik-Tok in the United States Congress has raised the prospect of the social media app either being sold to a US-based owner or being banned. Reports are now suggesting the buyer may come in the form of former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick in partnership with OpenAI’s Sam Altman, in a move that would enable OpenAI to train its AI models on TikTok’s immense content and data.
