Relationships Matter In Property Management

Relationships Matter In Property Management

One of the most important things to keep in mind when it comes to property management is the crucial importance of maintaining solid relationships with residents. Managing customers or clients is important in any business, but with property management, your business is providing people with one of the most important and personal things in their lives: a place to live. As a result, relationships matter more than ever, and here's how you can ensure you maintain good ones.

Communication Is Essential

One of the worst things property managers can do is be uncommunicative and unresponsive to residents. If residents have questions, they want answers. Perhaps more importantly, however, when residents have problems, they want to see those problems acknowledged and then resolved.

Failure to maintain communication and responsiveness can quickly lead to residents leaving and, with repeated criticisms online, extended vacancies. No one wants to live in a place where they know if they have a problem, it will go unaddressed. Communication and response are essential to keeping residents happy and maintaining a good reputation that can go on to attract even more residents.

Transparency & Clarity

Another important aspect of maintaining good relationships is being easy to understand and transparent. For example, residents will appreciate it if certain regulations or rules are clearly laid out from the start, rather than only finding out they are in violation of something after it has happened.

If there are emergency procedures, clearly lay them out rather than hoping common sense will prevail. When presenting lease agreements, make sure they are clear and direct and do not hide anything from residents. Being opaque, or worse yet, deliberately hiding things from residents that they should know about can quickly sabotage a good relationship and saddle a property with a poor reputation.
