Are you showing interest in other people when you DON'T need anything? Do you comment positively on their posts? Message or text them, periodically? Ask how they're doing? Congratulate them on their successes? Offer sincere condolences when they experience loss/bad things?
"Mark" used to like his job. He created a whole new safety program, his manager was very happy with his work and he was, too. Right up until his manager took all the credit for the program. Right up until the firm refused to give Mark a raise that he earned. Mark mentally quit his job. He works to collect the check and invests no energy in doing more than necessary. He invests most time in getting another job. Mark has built great relationships with vendors/suppliers/etc. He shows interest in them, beyond just work, itself. Guess what? This week, a vendor "Jan" told Mark about an available role (it's not publicly posted yet) and asked Mark to apply. Mark's on it. Had Mark not invested in relationship-building, Jan probably wouldn't have told Mark anything.
Want people to help you when you DO need help? Show interest in them when you DON'T.
