"RELATIONSHIP BUILDING" - ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT KEY TO BE A SUCCESSFUL LEADER..!!

Being Technically Sound, Knowing all aspects of an individual department and having too many years of experience is not only the key to become successful Leader/Administrator/Admin Head/Facilities Head…!!! In fact it also demands the relationship building and rapport that you maintain with your colleagues, peers, subordinates, seniors and especially with your juniors, counterpart & vendors.

It really doesn't matter what industry you're in or what position you hold – knowing how to build rapport can bring you countless opportunities. After all, when you have good rapport with someone, he or she will usually want to help you to succeed.

Few people might argue that this is a natural gift – either you can build rapport with people or you can't. However, this is not the whole story, rapport can be developed naturally, but anyone can also nurture and improve rapport building skill, just as they can do for any other skill.

Rapport forms the basis of meaningful, close and harmonious relationship between people. It's the sense of connection that you get when you meet someone you like and trust, and whose point of view you understand. It's the bond that is formed when you discover that you share with another's values and priorities in life.

When you have a rapport with someone, you share:

  • Mutual attentiveness:?you both are focused on, and interested in, what the other person is saying or doing.
  • Positivity:?you both are friendly and happy, and you show care and concern for each another.
  • Coordination:?you feel "in sync" with each another, so that you share a common understanding. Your energy levels, tone and body language are also similar.

?This connection can appear instantly – when you "click" with someone – or develop slowly, over time. It can grow naturally, without intent, or you can deliberately set out to build it.

Rapport isn't just a tool for building relationships, though; it's often the foundation of success. When you have a rapport with someone, you're better placed to influence, learn and teach, particularly as the trust that you've built up means other people are more likely to accept your ideas, to share information, and to create opportunities together.

?It has been observed that after getting hired at any senior position, few people gradually stop listening to opinion of their juniors and start behaving like a king of that particular department.

If his/her junior wants to give any idea/suggestion – They might feel insulted and feel that how he/she can give me suggestion/idea/opinion being my junior? - People start feeling insulted, insecure and envious…!!

If you have confidence on yourself and on your work then there is no requirement to be envious, in fact you should discuss with them and respect their opinion/ideas – You never know, it may turn to be one of the best innovation/initiative.

Yes, but for that you need to start building rapport with your juniors/peers/vendors and start respecting their opinions.

If you genuinely feel that his/her opinion won’t work out or it has a negative impact and if you are confident about it then you should discuss with him/her and explain it, that too personally and not in front of everyone.

The respect amongst your peers/team members/subordinates should be so high that if there is any disagreement, instead of opposition and defense, there should be a genuine effort to understand it mutually.

The attitude should be “If a person of my intelligence, competence and commitment disagrees with me, then there must be something to disagreement that I might don’t understand, and I need to understand it. Opposite person definitely have a perspective, a frame of reference that I need to look at and accept.”

?Next level in Relationship building is Motivation…!!

?If you want to grow as a successful leader then you should motivate your team members,

If your team mates are putting efforts to create something better, make sure to motivate him/her.

?I firmly believe that “If one is able to motivate his team members from heart then he is trimming his path to success

?An individual’s contribution to output is the resultant of two variables-his capacity for work and his willingness to work.

If ‘P’ as is Performance, ‘A’ as an Ability and ‘M’ as in Motivation, then P = ‘A’ x ‘M’

?It is clear that performance is not equal to the sum of an individual’s ability and motivation but rather to the product of these two variables.

Given the value of ability greater than Zero, level of performance is a constantly increasing function of amount of motivation. Since productivity is the effect of performance, it is logical to conclude that constant motivation increases productivity.

?Motivation is an important factor which brings employees satisfaction. This can be done by keeping into mind and framing an incentive plan for the benefit of the employees. This could initiate the following things:

  1. Monetary and non-monetary incentives,
  2. Promotion opportunities for employees,
  3. Disincentives for inefficient employees.

?Motivation satisfies the needs of individuals as well groups. Every individual or group of individuals joins an organization to fulfill certain personal needs. The motivation function of the leader serves to help such fulfillment.

It also promotes job satisfaction. When an employee’s needs are satisfied, he is on the way of Happiness, His job satisfaction is of more direct concern. It is the key to other important consequences.

Leaders in general are satisfied with jobs which are challenging in character and involve some creative thinking.

?And if he/she fails in achieving any target then you must show sympathy towards him/her and motivate by saying “its okay, you can do it – try again, I shall help you and together we shall achieve it”

?Showing sympathy towards team is also considered a part of moral motivation.?

?Sympathy is one of the most important aspects of creating harmonious relationships, reducing stress, and enhancing emotional awareness.

Leader’s ability to offer sympathy can allow him to stay vulnerable, defuse potential violence, help him hear the word 'no' without taking it as a rejection, revive lifeless conversation, and even hear the feelings & needs expressed through silence.

?Time and again, people transcend the paralyzing effects of psychological pain when they have sufficient contact with someone who can hear them empathically.

?Leaders should be able to provide homely/friendly environment to their team members because they are spending most of their day time for their organization compared to the time they spend for their family/friends.

?Last but not least people should also respect the vendors they are getting services from, Especially in Facilities, Real Estate, IT and Administration – Vendors are the one doing work at ground level…!!

They are one of the strongest base and foundation of organization, without which any organization won’t be able to function.

It has been observed that in any organization, people disrespect vendor’s very oftenly for silly reason and vendors feel offended/hurt for this and which in turn result in the quality of work that they offer, ultimately resulting in compromising the output.

Hence, I heartily request each one of you reading this article to respect each and every one they come across in their personal life and professional life.

It’s as simple as that, Give respect – Earn respect.

?Thank you for spending your valuable time reading this article.

That's indeed true Viral Mistry. Being good at relationships isn’t just a personality trait, it’s a key leadership skill. Without solid relationships, a leader can have a hard time bringing a team together and getting a project accomplished. Collaboration is only an effective workplace tool if the people who are collaborating can get along.

Great article Viral Mistry ..Another important aspect that plays a key in shaping an individual as a successful leader is; to accept people better than you. No matter at what position an individual is, it's very important to accept better people and respect their thoughts.
