Rejection Sucks!

Rejection Sucks!

Rejection sucks! It makes you feel small, dejected, and like you want to crawl underneath your bed covers and hide. But rejection is part of life, especially in business and sales. So instead of hiding from it, it may be time to embrace it. You can actually learn a lot about yourself, your value, and your ideal client or employer when you are rejected.?

Hiding from a potential rejection can keep you stuck earning less and may be a big roadblock to unleashing your true value. It’s not uncommon and many women attending my workshops or coaching sessions talk about this fear.? I often hear statements such as “I just hate being let down so I don’t ask for my full fee;” “Hearing no when I ask for a raise is almost worse than making less;” and “I worry I will cry if they reject my offer and look like a loser.” If you identify with these statements or have a similar one of your own, here is an exercise to help you reframe a “no” into a positive learning experience.?

Start by getting an index card and writing the word “no” twenty times on the card. Then write the word “yes” after the last “no.” Each time you hear “no” when advocating for your value or asking for a sale, cross off one of the “no” words. With every “no” you get closer to “yes.”? It still doesn’t feel great to get rejected, but using this method will help you see that you are moving closer to getting what you want. A big fat “yes”!?

I would love to hear what you learned last time you were rejected. Post your stories in the comments section and let’s embrace the “no” word together!?

Oh wow this idea is amazing Kathleen Kathleen Burns Kingsbury! As someone who appreciates getting rejected and still feels down sometimes when things don’t play out as expected, this approach to rejection flips the script and makes you see getting rejected as taking a step towards your true goal and result. Great idea, thanks for sharing!

Mary Kay Ash used to say “A no, is just a no.” Learning, as you say, is what is important.
