Rejection is a redirection: Lessons from my Keynote Address

Rejection is a redirection: Lessons from my Keynote Address

In my Keynote Era as I like to call it. Last Thursday I made over 100 women in Lawton, Oklahoma get up and dance to Selena's "Techno Cumbia," and talked about something that is so deeply personal for me and for all women... REJECTION.

Rejection is the reason why SBG exists, why Hustle + Socialize, exists, and why rejection continues to be fuel to my success.

Many women fear rejection. While I was researching and preparing the slide deck for my Keynote, I came across a study that referenced that when faced with rejection at a young age, young girls tie rejection back to their self-worth, which may sometimes reinforce the idea that they need to be 'perfect' to be accepted and can lead to self-doubt and a fear of taking risks. Yet young boys are encouraged to try again and see it as a challenge to overcome.

And it doesn't matter the age actually! In fact, while I was networking before I went on stage, a wonderful elder woman came up to me and said she feared being rejected because of the "young things" that are up and coming in business.

For me personally, a series of rejections from television stations was the catalyst for me diving into the deep water of entrepreneurship. The box that so many were trying to put me in after college and even once I launched my business was NOT MEANT FOR ME.

Sometimes rejections can be

  • a series of NOs
  • you not being for a certain group of folks
  • setbacks emotionally, physically, and spiritually

We tend to celebrate success but shy away from discussing the setbacks and failures that lead to it...LET’S REFRAME IT.

Some powerful takeaways/lessons you can take from rejection

  • It allows you to get really CLEAR about your vision and what you will or won't tolerate and what you won't.
  • It allows you to seek out mentors and allies that can mentor you and uplift you
  • It allows you to embrace embarrassing yourself, being your authentic self, and building your confidence muscles
  • It allows you to be persistent and try again.

Rejections often lead for us to get out of our comfort zone, where the magic happens. And Rejection is always a redirection. Rather than beating ourselves even more over the head, we can turn our adversity into self-growth and self-exploration. With each experience, we can grow stronger.
