Rejection Is Never Easy

I’ve always found the hardest part of my job is telling someone they haven’t been successful when they’ve had an interview.
In my last role where I recruited for private sector organisations, I wrote a blog called “There is no failure only feedback” I went on to describe how you can turn a rejection into an advantage and that any interview is a good interview as it’s firstly an achievement being offered one but also it gives you an opportunity to develop your interview technique.?There is no failure – only feedback. | LinkedIn
However, since I’ve started working with TPP and looking after their Trustee ‘voluntary’ roles with various charities I have to say I’m finding this conversation even harder to have.?
Telling someone who has taken the time and consideration to apply for an unremunerated voluntary role where they often have a deep, personal motivation for wanting to give their free time and have been unsuccessful is really tough.

I’ve been incredibly impressed though by the response from candidates and found it very humbling - “I’m so pleased the charity has had such a great response.” “I understand it’s important they get the best person for the role.” “It’s a shame but I’m just pleased they’ve found what they need.”
I don’t say this flippantly – I really do appreciate any rejection is disappointing, but sincerely candidates should not take it personally, please don’t let it put you off applying to other #charities if you’re not successful for a particular role.?Remember the #charity is extremely grateful to receive your application but will be offering the role to someone who has the closest match to the skills, knowledge and experience they’re currently looking for - someone whose input is likely to benefit them the most after they’ve identified (#skillsaudit) where they need the most help.

2 年Great article Lisa and such an important message for any people out there exploring trusteeships. Competition and interest in trustee positions has increased, with more people seeing the immense value these roles add to both themselves and the organisation. Staying positive in the process is key and I know you, Emma Jane Patmore and Matt Adams do what you can to help in that respect

2 年Totally agree with you Lisa! Feedback is never the easiest part of our role and nor should it be - as you say, people invest so much in their application and for all the very best reasons. This is why it matters that we, and all recruiters (whether from a recruitment company or a direct employer) provide useful, constructive feedback and advice about what to do next time. For recruitment companies: never forget the mantra of "one day candidate, next day client". People do remember those they've had a good experience with, even when the outcome isn't what they'd hoped for.
