Reinventing Spaces: How Theming transformed the Nagyerdei Beach into an award-winning destination

As time flies, novel waterparks and leisure spaces often face the challenge of remaining relevant. Revitalization through theming can breathe new life into existing facilities. This happened with Nagyerdei Beach in Debrecen, Hungary, where a decades-old beach was transformed into a one-of-a-kind waterpark experience.

The Challenge: A legacy in need of renewal

For generations, Nagyerdei Beach had been a beloved but outdated bathing facility. The city of Debrecen envisioned a modern, iconic destination that could blend into its natural surroundings while offering engaging, themed attractions for families and adventure-seekers alike.

Instead of a standard renovation, the project called for a bold thematic concept to make the location a storytelling destination. This is where Eleven Ltd. stepped in.

The Solution: A unique theming concept

BORD Architectural Studio partnered with Eleven Ltd. to develop a design that complemented the Great Forest Park (Nagyerd?) while introducing immersive storytelling elements. The forest-themed water playground and steampunk-inspired slides set the stage for an imaginative, multi-layered experience.

Key design choices included:

  • A fantasy-driven water playground inspired by the region's flora and fauna, featuring fairy tale trees and friendly animal figures.
  • A steampunk pirate ship and airship-inspired slide referencing classic adventure stories while offering a unique twist on traditional pirate theming.
  • A visual narrative of a sunken Victorian-era city, bringing depth to the visitor experience and inspiring curiosity.

And even a story was introduced to the client:

"According to British scientists, the Nagyerd? Lake in Debrecen hides an ancient sunken city – Atlantis. Only a few rooftops are visible above the water, which is almost impossible to reach by boat. In the Victorian era, at the dawn of industrialization and steam machines, they built an airship port which still operates today."

The Outcome: a new world in the heart of Debrecen

The waterpark opened in 2020 and became one of the most spectacular facilities in the region. In 2024, it was the destination of the European Waterpark Association's study tour.
