Reinforce, Renovate, or Replace our System Foundations

I watch so many shows about renovation for inspiration on fixing up my home. The formula of finding a home and then finding a big problem in that home is so exciting to me. Especially knowing they are definitely going to fix the problems. The big reveal is always beautiful. Almost all of the shows talk about the importance of the foundation. Some of the most beautiful homes have foundation issues uncovered once they look beneath the surface. This is especially true of older, historic homes. The decision has to be made whether to replace or reinforce the foundational items of the building. When the cracks in the foundation are discovered there is disappointment. But, the conversation quickly turns into fixing the problem. The owners and the contractors understand, no matter how much paint, drywall and tile they have ordered, none of the items will cover the need to fix the foundation.  

Similarly, in order to keep up with the ever-changing world, companies often find the need to update systems. And if they find issues in their foundation, they immediately look for ways to fix it. Usually, it involves changes in leadership, products and procedures. Oddly enough, when the analysis shows a need to update the treatment of employees and customers, there is a quick defensiveness and hesitation to change the cultural environment of favoritism and unwritten rules. The desire to hold on to the nostalgia and family like atmosphere hinders progress and leaves many companies in denial. We don’t realize how many of their employees don’t feel like a member of that family. 

The recent analysis of many companies has discovered the termites of racism and inequities eroding the very foundation of the organization. Therefore, the current request for companies to replace or repair their structures should be immediately understood as vital to the company’s sustainability. 

The superficial broadcasts and events recognizing the need to repair foundations is not enough. Just as no amount of paint or decorations can fix the foundation of a home; no amount of communications, pretty commercials or changes to diversity program names will actually fix the problems of an organization.  In one recent episode of renovations, bad pipes were discovered under the home. The contractors began removing and replacing small sections of damaged piping. However, they quickly realized fixing small sections was not enough. Fixing small sections only temporarily solved the problem. There were leaks seeping thru and causing problems. They said it would eventually deteriorate the other pipes as well. So, the decision was made to replace the entire system. Similarly, changing or adding one development program or employee networking group here and there will not fix the problems we are discovering in our systems.  

? We have to build a foundation with level flooring for equal footing for everyone. Starting with company values, leadership accountability and measured solutions.

? We have to build foundations with solid materials able to support employees with sponsorship and wellness programs for all team members.

 ? We want to make sure the foundation is reinforced, so it will not easily crack. It will take more than just a few leaders doing the work. All members of our company have to do their part in this important work.

We must realize solving the problems of inequality is just as vital as solving any other major business problem for business success. In fact, we could argue it is more important that other business problems; if we truly believe in the importance of appreciating our people as the foundation of our business.

Most companies say they value their people, and this should include all people. My hope is, Our commitment doesn't change just because we are giving the needed attention specifically to those who have been historically underrepresented. This is not a problem we can ignore. The importance of equality has to be reinforced in the framework of all processes and procedures.

We must reinforce, renovate, or replace the foundation of our systems and processes. The stability and success of our companies and communities depend on it.
