Description:

The Reimbursement Coding Representative works with other coders and billing staff within the Medical Billing Department in order to select the correct ICD-10 or CPT code prior to submission. As an entry-level coder this employee would be assigned routine, less difficult coding to review and correct.


Duties & Responsibilities:??

Assigns accurate ICD-10 codes, HCPCS, or CPT codes for both ancillary and physician services via Optum Software. Communicates with providers as well as clinical and billing staff members via telephone or email in order to validate proper usage of the correct billing codes or the placement of each code. Reviews/validates/corrects codes in Epic work queues prior to submission. Participates with in-house coding training, keeps apprised of current coding updates through online coding education from Optum, AAPC, or other education venues in order to stay current with coding changes and to maintain coding current certification. Prepares basic written correspondence and/or contacts third party payers. by telephone or email as well as clinic staff to correct outstanding billing issues. Updates and documents all pertinent information into Epic System. Reviews and corrects any denied claims that were denied for incorrect billing or coding via Epic. Collaborates with other coding/ancillary staff in Pediatrics, Medicine, Psychiatry, OB, and Medical Billing.

Attends monthly Coder Meetings or other department related meetings. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school graduation or equivalent.
  2. Any one or any combination totaling 18 months from the following categories:
  3. Work experience in a healthcare setting (i.e., hospital, physician’s office, nursing home, billing agency) utilizing ICD-10, and CPT coding systems, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), and the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) systems of coding to assign codes for services provided to patients.
  4. College course work relating to healthcare operations includes the following topics such as Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, ICD-10 Coding, and CPT Coding, or closely related courses.
  5. 6 semester hours equals 6 months
  6. 12 semester hours equals 12 months
  7. 18 semester hours equals 18 months
  8. Current designation as Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A), Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or a Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) (formerly CPC-H certification) or current certification as a Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) satisfies all the requirements for this classification.
