Helping Cities, Urban innovators, and Enterprises make the impossible possible with the power of AI and digital transformation.
Every year, Barcelona becomes a central hub for urban technology pioneers and visionaries to attend the Smart City Expo World Congress . This started in 2011, five years after the term ‘smart city’ emerged as a prominent discussion for the cities of the future.
Throughout history, city life has evolved and been shaped by the technology of the era. Tracing back to the early civilizations, we saw innovations from the Romans who invented roads to the Minoans who introduced aqueducts. This later progressed into the Mesopotamians creating the clay sewer pipes, and to Benjamin Franklin’s discovery of electricity which paved the way for contemporary innovations. The modern world would soon realize the potential of 21st-century breakthroughs including 5G, cloud technologies, and, most notably, AI.?
One fact has remained consistent throughout this journey through time, cities have consistently pursued new methods and improvements to deliver a better, safer, and more sustainable life for their residents.?
This leads us to the discussion surrounding the most disruptive technology that is in our hands today. Technologies that once seemed like a dream are now a reality and NVIDIA is at the forefront of this journey.
From IoT to Generative AI and the Redefinition of Smart Cities
In 2006, connectivity was cutting-edge technology. Cities that invested in it soon reaped the rewards of what they had sown. Connectivity not only paved the way for digitization, making everything IP-enabled but also ushered the Internet of Things (IoT) into reality.?
IoT, with ubiquitous connectivity, led to datafication and big data. The world was then turned into a colossal data pool, and with this, we would embark upon a mission to extract value from it.?
With edge and cloud computing becoming widely adopted and AI being made more accessible by NVIDIA, we entered an era that would shape our cities and lives for decades to come. The emergence of generative AI has further unveiled a cornucopia of creative possibilities, the impacts of which we eagerly anticipate.
In tandem with these technological developments, our definition of “smart” evolved. Transitioning from connected cities to genuinely smart cities, our aspirations have varied from sustainability to safety, and from intelligence to cognitive functionalities.?

The core idea remains the same, cities should remain at the forefront of embracing and leveraging technology. Forums like SCEWC offer a platform to stay ahead with all of the discussions around the latest innovations in smart cities from NVIDIA and our partners.?
Transforming Urban Service with AI: Sensing, Learning, and Pioneering the Future of Smart Cities
An old friend of mine – a customer at the time – told me that city services boil down to two key functions: sensing and actuating. Both have the same purpose of achieving a well-defined goal. Improve these two functions and everything else will follow. This philosophy made me think about how we can reinvent these two functions with the technology we have today.
When citizens report urban issues, the traditional process of escalation and resolution is often prolonged and vague. However, with the tools of today such as sensors to detect, AI to interpret, and edge computing to analyze in real time, we are able to expedite this process.?
Looking to the future, it is worth considering how we might further shape this domain and, on reflection, how far we have already come. Sensors have given us a heightened sense of vision and sound. AI and deep learning have enabled us to empower machines with perception that exceeds human capabilities with exceptional precision. Thanks to AI accelerated computing, this is achieved with unparalleled speed, be it locally at the edge or from afar via the cloud. For example, a standard device or service vehicle is able to detect anomalies like leaks, smoke, or subtle visual pollution. Also, cities are able to understand mobility and space utilization in real-time allowing them to react accordingly. The reporting of these becomes nearly instantaneous. Coupled with data, imagery, and precise geotagging, this information can then be used to allow the system to continually evolve, becoming more cognitive. With the advent of generative AI, the scope for innovation knows no bounds.
The Three Pillars of AI: Transforming Urban Dynamics through Perception, Simulation, and Generation
There are three main types of AI. Perception AI, where we perceive the world by detecting, classifying, and segmenting. Simulation AI, where we simulate real life, in real-time, with extremely high fidelity while abiding by the law of physics. Generation AI, where we create new things by understanding structure. AI in its various forms promises to reshape urban life. Cities equipped with real-time data insights can make better decisions and can transition from reactive to proactive stances. When we apply human-centric applications, we have evidence that shows improvements in safety, efficiency, and a whole new set of services that are becoming available.
For firsthand experience of these advancements, I invite you to join NVIDIA and our partners at SCEWC and witness real-world applications from airport management and traffic solutions to safe cities and disaster relief.
