Reimagining Tugh: Revitalizing a Historic Village Post-Conflict

Reimagining Tugh: Revitalizing a Historic Village Post-Conflict

In 2022, we embarked on a remarkable journey to revitalize Tugh, a small yet historically rich village in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. After decades of abandonment due to the conflict in 1992, Tugh was left as a ghost village, its structures and landscapes frozen in time. Today, as the first stages of the planning phase are completed, and with implementation already underway, we reflect on the profound responsibility and innovative approach that such a project entails.

Affordable Comfort and Sustainability: A New Life for Tugh

Despite its modest size, with a projected population of just 1,000 residents, Tugh stands as a testament to the possibilities of blending modern living with historical preservation. Our mission here has been clear from the start: to create a village that not only respects and restores its past but also offers a sustainable and comfortable future for its inhabitants. This aligns with our broader philosophy of "affordable comfort," ensuring that the spaces we design are not only accessible and livable but also in harmony with their environment.

A Comprehensive, Collaborative Approach

Designing a post-conflict village like Tugh is far more than a standard architectural endeavor; it is a complex, multi-disciplinary task requiring the collaboration of diverse experts. From the project's inception, we have worked hand-in-hand with a wide array of specialists, including historical consultants, restorers, and geotechnical engineers. Each played a vital role in ensuring that our designs are not only structurally sound but also culturally and environmentally respectful.

In close coordination with the Azerbaijani government, we meticulously planned every aspect of the village's rebirth. This included not just the physical infrastructure, but also the social and economic fabric of the community. We considered everything from public amenities to the economic activities that would sustain the village, ensuring that Tugh's residents would have both a place to live and a means to thrive.

A Holistic Vision for Post-Conflict Reconstruction

This project exemplifies what we mean by a holistic approach to post-disaster and post-conflict urban design. It goes beyond merely rebuilding what was lost. Instead, we aim to create something that both honors the past and meets the needs of the future. Tugh is not just being restored; it is being reimagined as a vibrant, sustainable community that can serve as a model for similar efforts worldwide.

As we continue to work on Tugh, stage by stage, we are reminded of the broader implications of our work. Designing a post-conflict area requires a careful balance of preservation and innovation, ensuring that the cultural heritage is not lost, while also creating spaces that support modern life. Through this project, we reaffirm our commitment to creating affordable, comfortable, and sustainable environments, even in the most challenging of contexts.

Conclusion: A Blueprint for the Future

Our work in Tugh is a powerful example of what can be achieved when architectural projects are approached with a comprehensive, inclusive mindset. It is a reminder that post-conflict and post-disaster reconstruction must consider more than just the physical rebuilding of structures. It must also involve the thoughtful restoration of communities, economies, and cultures, ensuring that the new life we bring to these areas is as resilient and vibrant as the history we seek to preserve.
