Reimagining Ethics@Novartis
Klaus Moosmayer
Member of the Executive Committee and Chief Ethics, Risk and Compliance Officer of Novartis, Board Member of SwissHoldings and Business@OECD
At Novartis we want to reimagine Ethics by creating a new Code of Ethics from associates for associates. The journey we are on is ultimately not just about a code. It’s about driving ethical behaviors and unlocking the inherent desire of associates to do the right thing for society, Novartis and themselves.
Last week, we marked a milestone in this journey.
With 1500 associates ?live“ we conducted our first EthicsLive townhall at Novartis. I invited my colleagues from the Executive Committee, Marie-France Tschudin and Jay Bradner, and we discussed with colleagues and our external guest Katharina Weghmann from EY what drives ethical behavior and decision-making.
One topic we discussed was what we can learn from behavioral science in our own daily life and it was interesting to see that we are more likely to suspect others of unethical behaviors than we are to take accountability for our own behavior.
Our event, EthicsLive, was a kick-off to a much deeper, ongoing conversation across Novartis as we co-create our new Code of Ethics in a completely different way as things were done in the past. We’re taking an innovative approach with a focus on creation by our people, for our people using townhalls, dialogue platforms and crowd sourcing in order to get as many of our 105,000 colleagues at Novartis engaged. We have already received hundreds of comments and proposals.
I’m excited and curious about where we’re going with this, because it will empower our associates to be active contributors and to voice their daily ethical dilemmas. We will take time for this intense campaign and dialogue and plan to have our new Code in place mid 2020 - as an important part of our cultural journey at Novartis, which is spearheaded by our CEO, Vas Narasimhan.

4 年Super exciting approach Klaus Moosmayer, great that you can engage the whole organization and include them in the decision and shape the way compliance and ethics are managed. Engagement is key to make people committed. Ethical decision making framework is the way to go. Would be glad to get to know more about your approach.

5 年Congratulations! What a great initiative. The time has come to turn words into deeds. The prerequisite for an #CodeofEthics is a common understanding of the values in a company. A co-creation model is very well suited for this. However, the goal must be to transform the Code into action that can be operationalized. idigiT - Institute for Digital Transformation in Healthcare GmbH Manuela Mackert Steven Hildemann Hendrik A. 5 年It's great,?Klaus Moosmayer, that you are able to engage so many associates in this journey and I understand that you received a lot of feedback. The challenge is going to be to mould this is into a Code that is easy to read and understand and everybody still recognizes as truly 'ours'. All the best in this journey and keep us updated! ??
