Reimagining Cancer Care: A Future-Focused Approach to Innovation and Sustainability

November 7th is observed as National Cancer Awareness Day, it’s a fitting moment to reflect on the global advancements in cancer care and consider how they can shape a sustainable future. With cancer cases on the rise worldwide, there is a pressing need not only for breakthrough treatments but also for approaches that minimize environmental impact. As per the American Cancer Society (ACS), an estimated 20 mn cancer cases were newly diagnosed in 2022. Global cancer burden is growing, and with it, a mounting need for sustainable service. Sustainable cancer care is of global importance as it addresses the increasing burden of cancer on individuals, families, and societies. This includes addressing the physical, emotional, and financial impact of cancer on patients, as well as the impact on healthcare systems and resources. Across the globe, countries are beginning to prioritize eco-friendly practices in healthcare. India and Ireland are doing their part as well.

Globally, other countries are exploring sustainable healthcare models. For instance, Sweden has focused on energy-efficient hospitals and waste reduction in healthcare (Reference), The US, too, has seen initiatives aimed at reducing healthcare emissions, with hospitals investing in renewable energy sources and waste reduction strategies. These initiatives highlight how sustainable practices can be woven into the fabric of healthcare infrastructure, paving the way for a more eco-conscious approach to medical care (Reference).

Ireland has made significant strides by developing innovations that prioritize patient health while remaining environmentally conscious. This includes groundbreaking research in eco-friendly treatment protocols and practices aimed at reducing the carbon footprint in cancer care. Ireland’s commitment to sustainable oncology emphasizes that quality care and environmental responsibility can indeed go hand in hand

India, with its extensive healthcare network, represents an immense opportunity to implement and expand these sustainable practices on a large scale. Rising cancer rates and a commitment to increasing healthcare accessibility make India well-positioned to incorporate Ireland’s model of sustainable oncology, tailoring it to meet the unique needs of its diverse population.

The collaboration between Ireland and India holds transformative potential.
