Reigniting the conversation on safer sex and relationships

They might be red, green, black, ribbed, dotted or smooth, lubed or not - but they all have one thing in common: Condoms are - when used correctly - the ONLY contraceptive that will prevent you from getting chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, HIV and hepatitis B.?As the world celebrated International Condom Day on 13th February, 2024, we should celebrate this revolutionary health invention and (re)ignite the dialogue on safer sex.

It's been a while since the first rubber condoms began to be mass produced in the 1860, but the need to distribute them, use them and talk about the necessity of using them is more needed than ever - especially amongst young people. In Uganda, a nation with one of the youngest populations globally (3 out of 4 people are under 25 years), the need for comprehensive family planning education and access to suitable products is more pressing than ever. Recognizing this urgency, Healthy Entrepreneurs (HE) is committed to empowering communities with knowledge and resources for informed decision-making.

Our Community Health Entrepreneurs (CHEs) serve as beacons of education and support, reaching even the most remote corners in the over 58 districts we operate in, to ensure access to vital reproductive healthcare services. In the third quarter alone, our efforts bore fruit, as 38,000 sets of contraception packages were sold. While CHEs do not initiate oral contraceptive use, we provide essential follow-up medication, ensuring continuity of care for approximately 12,000 women. Additionally, 414,720 condoms were distributed to patients, highlighting our dedication to promoting safer sex practices. Moreover, 800 emergency contraceptives were provided, offering women access to timely interventions when needed.

As we marked this day last week, let's renew our commitment to re-engage, re-invigorate, and re-educate about the importance of condoms and other contraceptives in safeguarding sexual health. Together, with our dedicated CHEs and partners, we can pave the way for a future where every individual has the tools and knowledge to make empowered choices about their sexual well-being.
