?? Regulatory Update: EU Officially Bans BPA in Food Contact Materials ??

On December 31, 2024, the EU Official Journal published the BPA Ban (EU) 2024/3190, further amending the Plastic Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 and repealing (EU) 2018/213 regarding the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials such as varnishes, coatings, and plastics. This ban will officially take effect on January 20, 2025.

Key Highlights of the BPA Ban:

1?? Prohibition of BPA and its salts in the production of food contact adhesives, rubber, ion exchange resins, plastics, printing inks, silicones, varnishes, and coatings.

2?? No residual BPA allowed in food contact materials and articles manufactured using other bisphenols or bisphenol derivatives.

3?? Ban on harmful bisphenols and derivatives (other than BPA) in food contact materials, unless specific use authorization is granted under Article 9 of Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and included in the BPA ban.

Transition Periods:

Food contact materials and articles manufactured with BPA before the regulation's effective date, and compliant with applicable rules, will have an 18-month or 36-month transition period. This means they can be placed on the market until July 20, 2026, or January 20, 2028, respectively.
