Ever since Chat GTP became mainstream, the future of artificial intelligence (AI) has been hotly debated in the media, politics and academia. The call to regulate its development has been growing stronger, even from the leading developers of AI themselves.?The fear that an unchecked arms race in AI development could wreak havoc on society is looming large.
The Progressive Post takes the opportunity of this very special week to dedicate a timely dossier on what is at stake in the AI question – and how to harness it. It has been, indeed, just two days ago that the European Parliament voted in favour of the AI Act. This is world premiere:?the first serious attempt to regulate AI globally, hopefully leading to the establishment of tight guardrails for the development of AI?as well as keeping high-risk AI systems in check. And,?en passant, re-establishing the EU as a global rule setter in tech.

On June 14, the European Parliament took a decisive step towards the adoption of common rules for EU member states on artificial intelligence, approving by a very large majority of 499 votes in favour – and with only 28 against and 93 abstentions –, the negotiating mandate to be taken to the trialogue with the Council and the European Commission.?Read more
