Regulate AI's deception

Social Media and Gen AI are driven by profit focused incentives and endanger society and need stricter regulations

Social Media's Broken Promises

Social media platforms initially promised connection and global communication. However, their business model, focused on maximizing user engagement for advertising revenue, has had negative consequences. Social media has been linked to:

  • Decreased attention spans
  • Increased political polarization
  • Mental health issues like anxiety and loneliness

Social media's algo, which selects what content users see, is the culprit. It prioritizes engagement, regardless of the content's quality or truthfulness.

Generative AI: A New Threat

Generative AI, the ability to create entirely new content like text, code, images, and audio, is the next frontier from tech giants. However, its potential dangers:

  • Deepfakes and voice cloning can be used for scams and blackmail.
  • It can be weaponized to spread misinformation and target voters with extreme precision.
  • The ease of creating content can exacerbate the spread of negativity and disinformation.

Similar to social media, generative AI's rapid development is driven by the pressure to be first in the market, with little regard for potential harm.

The Need for Regulation and Accountability

There has to be stricter regulations on AI development and deployment. Governments struggle to regulate emerging technologies, but they must act to:

  • Hold tech giants accountable for the harms their products cause.
  • Create a legal framework that imposes financial penalties for proven harm.
  • Motivate companies to prioritize safety throughout the development and deployment process.

Unlike social media, where a wait-and-see approach resulted in negative consequences, we cannot afford to be passive with generative AI. We need proactive measures to ensure a safer and more ethical future.

I don't think financial penalties would harm anyone found exploiting Gen AI for wrong purposes. Laws should be so strong that Gen AI technology is not misused.
