Regularly Reading Together, A Family Learns to try the Impossible
“My Favorite NABU story taught me to try things that may seem hard or impossible!" -Thomas Cyiza
On a visit to Musanze, in the northern district of the province of Rwanda, we met 12 year old Thomas Cyiza and his older brother Samuel Cyiza. They live with their? parents and two younger sisters.?
“I learned about the NABU App when I met one of NABU’s reading ambassadors. He asked me if I had younger siblings who can benefit from a free reading app and I quickly thought of Thomas and my younger sisters” Samuel said.?
Upon introducing NABU’s free reading app to his younger siblings, Samuel says they were immediately fascinated with the short stories and incredible illustrations.?
“My favorite story is “Tinyuka Kugerageza” (Dare to Try), because it taught me to try things that seem hard or impossible. I love all of the adventure stories and I like that the books are in Kinyarwanda and English” Thomas said.?
“I love to read the NABU books with my younger sisters and my older brother on Samuel’s phone. Although they cannot read in Kinyarwanda fluently yet,? I am teaching them slowly and having fun learning together”, he added.
Thomas would love to be a medical doctor when he grows up so that he can help those in need. For now he will continue to enjoy NABU books, commit to teach his sisters to read, and work hard both in and outside of the classroom.?
Thomas’s older brother, Samuel adds that he likes the NABU App because it has stories that are relatable to daily life experiences. Samuel and Thomas make a great team to teach their younger sisters to read using the NABU app. It’s beautiful to see this family working together to learn how to read and expand their education! You too can access our free library of children’s books on our NABU app here. Bond with your child over story time or help teach your child to read over our very own children’s books.?
As a final comment, Samuel asked and encouraged NABU to consider building physical libraries across the country to cater to those who do not have access to the NABU reading application.?This is great insight from Samuel and we think he may be on to something. We will be exploring this further and seeing how we can one day make this a reality.?Will you help us? Donate today!
