BOARD SABERMETRICS STORY OF THE WEEK…

CEO Regrets!

NBCUniversal CEO, Jeff Shell, is stepping down following an 'inappropriate relationship' with a colleague.

"I had an inappropriate relationship with a woman in the company, which I deeply regret. I'm truly sorry I let my Comcast and NBCUniversal colleagues down, they are the most talented people in the business and the opportunity to work with them the last 19 years has been a privilege."

Comcast, the owner of NBCUniversal, is run by Lord of the Family Firm (and CEO), Brian Roberts, who reported being “disappointed” to share the news. If you’re new around here, a company is deemed a family firm when a founder's family maintains at least 10% of control over the company and at least one seat on the board.

Roberts’s Board Sabermetrics stats:

  • Roberts owns all of the Class B common stock, which is entitled to 15 votes per share (Class A common stock is entitled to 0.0634 votes per share)
  • He owns 1% of outstanding shares but controls 35% of the vote
  • Roberts has an influence score of 72%

Despite being a family firm, there is one non-family-member high achiever on the Comcast board: Naomi Bergman. One of the ways that we use Board Sabermetrics to evaluate performance is by assigning a batting average to directors. A director’s batting average measures how the individual performs across four metrics, relative to their board member peers:

  • Earnings over the past 5 years
  • TSR
  • Carbon
  • Controversial business activity

Bergman’s overall batting average is .573, which makes her a Starter! Driving her above-average number is a team-best of .896 in controversies whereas the rest of the team averages .137.

Why is she winning? Simple: she hasn’t been on the Comcast board long enough to have one of the worst controversial business records in the S&P 500! Nevertheless, keep up the good work, Naomi.

Naomi Bergman, a Comcast Starter according to Board Sabermetrics!
Comcast’s Naomi Bergman has the highest batting average on the board at .573. This gives her Board Sabermetrics Starter status.
