Regenerative offices: What do they consist of?

The rise of regenerative design is transforming the way we think about workspaces. These designs not only seek sustainability, but also focus on creating environments that proactively act to improve the well-being of their occupants. In this article, we explore the key features of regenerative offices and how they can positively impact employee health and productivity.

A regenerative environment

A regenerative environment is an entity that is based on comprehensible and accessible experiences, providing a sense of security and comfort. When designing these spaces, the needs and preferences of users, whether indoors or outdoors, are taken into account.

As American environmental psychologist Steven Kaplan states, ‘the ability to concentrate improves after spending a few moments outdoors or simply looking at images of nature’. This idea, known as the Attention Restoration Theory (ART), emphasises the importance of integrating natural elements into workspaces. For example, a green wall, which is already common in many workplaces, not only purifies the air, but also offers a visual respite in the middle of the workday. Link to Nature: Regenerative design prioritizes a closer relationship to nature through the use of locally sourced materials, biodiversity, and natural light. This connection goes beyond aesthetics.

Community Engagement: By interacting with the local community, regenerative workplaces promote a feeling of shared responsibility and belonging.
