Reg Flags For Interviews

Reg Flags For Interviews

Here are five warning signs to watch out for during an interview, along with examples and what they might reveal about the job:

1. Disinterested or Distracted Interviewer

Example: The interviewer is constantly checking their phone, glancing at the clock, or seems unengaged.

What it reveals: This could indicate that the company does not value your time or is not genuinely interested in your potential contribution. It might also suggest a disorganized or unprofessional work environment[1].

2. Lack of Preparation by the Interviewer

Example: The interviewer has not reviewed your resume or seems unfamiliar with your background.

What it reveals: This may suggest that the company is disorganized or does not take the hiring process seriously. It could also indicate a lack of respect for potential employees.

3. Negative Comments About Current or Former Employees

Example: The interviewer makes negative remarks about current or former employees.

What it reveals: This could be a sign of a toxic work culture where employees are not valued or respected. It might also indicate poor management practices[2].

4. Unclear or Vague Job Descriptions

Example: The interviewer provides little information about the role or the company, or the job description is very vague.

What it reveals: This might suggest that the company is hiding something about the role or that they are not clear about what they need. It could also indicate a lack of transparency or poor organizational structure.

5. Inappropriate or Unprofessional Behavior

Example: The interviewer asks inappropriate questions or behaves unprofessionally, such as arriving late or using inappropriate language.

What it reveals: This can indicate a lack of professionalism and respect within the company. It might also suggest a toxic work environment or poor company culture.

How to Prepare to Spot These Red Flags

  1. Research the Company: Before the interview, thoroughly research the company. Look for reviews on sites like Glassdoor, and check their social media presence to get a sense of their culture and reputation.
  2. Prepare Questions: Have a list of questions ready to ask the interviewer. These should include questions about the company culture, management style, and specifics about the role. This can help you gauge their transparency and professionalism.
  3. Observe the Environment: Pay attention to the office environment if the interview is in person. Notice how employees interact with each other and their overall demeanour. This can give you insights into the company culture.
  4. Listen Actively: During the interview, listen carefully to what the interviewer says and how they say it. Take note of any inconsistencies or red flags in their responses.
  5. Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off during the interview, trust your gut. It's better to walk away from a potentially bad situation than to accept a job that could be detrimental to your well-being.

By being observant and prepared, you can better identify these warning signs and make a more informed decision about whether a job is the right fit for you. Good luck with your interviews! If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.

Great points on the red flags. I came across most of these in the early part of my Procurement career. One thing i did was formulate a list of companies that i would not like to work for or interview with from this experience.

This comes down to basic etiquette, let alone interview etiquette. I’ve sadly witnessed these behaviours with a fellow interviewer whilst conducting an interview! How do you deal with that in the moment??
