Refurbished vs Remanufactured
If you know Go Communications, you know that refurbished network kit is our thing. It’s our passion, and our bread and butter too. But recently, we’ve been getting more queries about remanufactured kit, and questions about the differences between the two (and, of course, which is better).?
So this month’s newsletter will explore refurbished vs remanufactured… place your bets now!
Pros and Cons of Remanufactured Equipment
Remanufactured network equipment goes through a rigorous process to ensure it meets the original manufacturer's specifications. During the remanufacturing process, the equipment is disassembled, inspected, cleaned, and rebuilt with new components to meet said standards.?
This extensive process ensures that the equipment is almost as good as new and can often come with a warranty. However, due to the lengthy and complex process and the need for replacement parts with new components, remanufactured equipment can be more expensive than refurbished equipment.
As well as being pricey, remanufactured equipment can also increase your carbon footprint by as much as half of new equipment. This is because the process of disassembling, inspecting, cleaning, and rebuilding equipment takes up so much energy and resources.?
What’s more, if the market valuation of the remanufactured equipment drops, there is a higher chance of write-downs, which can result in additional costs.?
Pros and Cons of Refurbished Equipment
It has to be said objectively, refurbished network equipment is simply not as high quality as remanufactured equipment.?
Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean for a second you’ll be able to tell the difference in use - if sourced from a reputable dealer the performance of refurbished kit is indistinguishable from brand new! But refurbished equipment is refreshed rather than completely rebuilt, and will contain older components and the occasional MacGyver style makeshift fix (yes, I’m still proud of the time we used bicarbonate of soda to save a switch from the scrap heap).?
However, it is much kinder to your bank account and the environment. Refurbished equipment is typically cheaper to produce and has a much lower carbon footprint than remanufactured.?
This is primarily because refurbishing is done on an as-needed basis and does not require the same level of disassembly, cleaning, and rebuilding as remanufacturing. Plus, since the equipment is not being completely rebuilt, there is less chance of value write-downs.

When it comes to making a decision between refurbished and remanufactured network equipment, both options have their advantages and disadvantages. However, it is important to consider the environmental impact of the equipment as well as the cost.
How Do They Measure Up Against Each Other?
While remanufactured equipment may seem like the better option due to its high quality and warranty, it is important to remember that it comes at a higher cost and can have a significant environmental impact. Additionally, the extensive process of remanufacturing may not always be necessary for every piece of equipment.
Refurbished equipment, on the other hand, is more affordable and has a lower environmental impact. While it may not be as high quality as remanufactured equipment, it is still a viable option for many businesses. By refurbishing equipment as needed, businesses can reduce their carbon footprint and save money on equipment costs. Additionally, since the equipment is not being completely rebuilt, there is less chance of value write-downs.
In conclusion, while remanufactured equipment may seem like the better option due to its higher quality and manufacturer warranty, the cost and environmental impact, as well as performance make refurbished equipment the better choice. By opting for refurbished equipment, businesses can save money and reduce their carbon footprint while still maintaining the same high level of functionality in their network equipment.

I always tell my clients ( and children when buying a vehicle) to go brand new or go as inexpensive as you can. Why spend good money for a used product that is somewhat obsolete and comes with limited warranty if any at all. I have always had excellent results with refurbished when I didn't go new. 1 年Lovely newsletter David, got me at the edge of the seat??. After careful thoughts between remanufacturing and refurbish I would say it's a game between pristine and subpar work done. Low carbon footprint finishes from refurbishing has a softer effect on our environment but through consistency does add up at a slower rate if it's distributed on a large scale; as for the sacrifice for a way better finish it could be considered only on a lower scale in distribution.
