Are refugees truly home? Understanding their journey on World Refugee Day

This year's World Refugee Day calls for solidarity with refugees, a world where they are welcomed - a reminder of the crises that force people to flee their homes and the long-term efforts needed for their integration into new communities.

Despite losing loved ones, homes, and a sense of normalcy, refugees exemplify resilience. They demonstrate an incredible ability to rebuild their lives, highlighting the human spirit's capacity to endure despite severe adversity.

The concept of home for refugees

Home is a place of safety, comfort, and belonging for most of us. It is where we are rooted and our memories are made. However, for refugees and displaced individuals, the concept of home is complicated. When someone is forced to flee their country due to conflict, natural disasters, or persecution, their sense of home is uprooted, and so begins a journey of uncertainty and often one of prolonged displacement. Many spend years in refugee camps, waiting for the chance to rebuild their lives. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) notes there are over 36.4 million refugees globally, with an average displacement duration of over ten years.

Resettlement and integration

For some refugees, resettlement offers a path to a new beginning. Resettlement is a critical solution that allows them to live safely and rebuild their lives. However, resettlement numbers are low, with less than one percent of the world's refugees being resettled yearly.

Even after resettlement, integrating into a new society can be challenging. Refugees must navigate new cultural norms, learn new languages, and often overcome trauma.

The support systems in host communities play a vital role in helping refugees adapt and feel a sense of belonging. Community involvement, access to education, employment opportunities, and mental health services are crucial for successful integration.

Stories of resilience

Despite the adversities, refugees exhibit remarkable resilience. Take the example of Fabrice Kitala Mupenge and Olivier Itulabwami, two Congolese refugees, popularly known as the "Wi-fi boys," bringing affordable internet connection to Kenya's Kakuma refugee camp. Despite the long journey, they have found a place to call home. For them, home means a place where they are able to build a business and improve their lives and those of the communities. The two are beneficiaries of AECF's Kakuma Kalobeyei Challenge Fund (KKCF), which harnesses the potential of refugees as agents of positive change, enabling them to rebuild their lives and contribute to the social and economic fabric of Turkana County.

Against all odds, the duo exemplifies a growing initiative attracting private investment, delivering essential goods and services, and creating employment opportunities for refugees and their host communities in Kenya's Kakuma camp and beyond.

The humanitarian space and role of global solidarity

Addressing the global refugee crisis requires a collective effort. International cooperation and solidarity are essential in providing protection and solutions for refugees. The humanitarian space is a complex and ever-evolving field that requires constant adaptation to address the needs of refugees effectively. Governments, non-governmental organizations, and communities must work together to ensure that refugees can access their fundamental rights and opportunities for a dignified life.

Despite the noble intentions of global solidarity, challenges persist. Environmental crises and protracted conflicts continue to drive displacement, placing additional strain on humanitarian efforts.

However, amidst these challenges lie opportunities for innovation and collaboration - and a commitment to leaving no one behind in our pursuit of a more just and compassionate world.

Conclusion: Redefining home

For refugees, the journey to finding a place that feels like home transcends borders. It is about more than just physical safety; it is rebuilding lives, creating new memories, and fostering a sense of belonging in a new environment. On World Refugee Day, let us support their journey, honor their resilience, and work towards a world where everyone can find a place to call home.
