Refugees on Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship has always been a compelling topic, and with the involvement of refugees, a significant area of study has emerged—Refugee Entrepreneurship, also known as a global phenomenon.

Conceptually, this phenomenon refers to entrepreneurial activities undertaken in a new host country by individuals forcibly displaced from their homes due to war, conflict, and persecution.

Refugees typically do not initially consider entrepreneurship as their primary option. The choice to become an entrepreneur is influenced by factors such as labor market conditions, potential earnings in self-employment versus traditional employment, and the quality of welfare benefits. For most refugee entrepreneurs, covering their immediate living expenses is essential, and financial support during the early stages of business development is crucial.

In situations where high unemployment and poor economic conditions affect the local population, refugees tend to choose entrepreneurship over paid employment as it provides a more direct path to subsistence. In Kenya’s Kakuma-Kalobeyei refugee-hosting area, there are more than 2,500 refugee enterprises that employ and serve people in the region. These ventures are most often found in sectors with low entry barriers, such as food, small-scale trade, handicrafts, and beauty services. Women refugees often pursue entrepreneurship for the flexibility it offers to balance work with domestic roles. However, these refugee entrepreneurs in camps face significant challenges, such as legal restrictions on work rights, limited mobility, scarce financial services, and a lack of business training and market access.

Now, we at TEDI Africa are driving solutions: support systems inspired by the potential of these global phenomenons—Refugee Entrepreneurs. We stand committed to empowering them through a variety of programs designed to enhance their business skills and opportunities. One of the key offerings is Vocational Training, which equips them with the practical skills and knowledge necessary to start and manage their own businesses. These trainings cover a range of topics, from product development to financial literacy, ensuring that participants have a solid foundation for their entrepreneurial ventures.

In addition to skill development, we also organize Workshops that delve into various aspects of entrepreneurship. These workshops provide insights into business planning, marketing strategies, and financial management, all tailored to the unique challenges faced by refugees. By participating in these sessions, refugee entrepreneurs can gain the tools they need to navigate the business landscape successfully.

Mentorship events are another critical component of TEDI Africa's support system. These events connect refugee entrepreneurs with experienced business mentors who offer guidance and advice. The mentors help the entrepreneurs tackle the challenges of running a business, from operational issues to strategic decision-making, providing a valuable support network.

Furthermore, TEDI Africa hosts social innovation seminars that encourage creative thinking and problem-solving. These seminars are designed to inspire innovative approaches to business, which are essential for success in challenging environments like refugee camps. Through these seminars, entrepreneurs learn to develop solutions that address socio-economic inequalities and contribute positively to their communities.

TEDI Africa's programs are aimed at fostering a spirit of innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship among refugees. We focus on educational and entrepreneurial initiatives that create sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by refugees in Africa.

Join us in this mission to empower refugee entrepreneurs. By offering our support, we not only aid in their individual success but also contribute to the broader economic development and cultural enrichment of our global community.

Let’s take action and make a difference. Reach out, get involved, and be a part of the change.
