Refugee innovations, digital design advice, and worrying news for girls in ICT

Hello,

Welcome to our June newsletter,

This month we are celebrating two very important moments, and highlighting one very worrying one.

World Refugee Day

Each year on June 20th, we join UNHCR in honouring the resilience and courage of refugees worldwide. This World Refugee Day, we're spotlighting four remarkable innovations making a profound impact on refugee lives. From digital ID systems to job training programs, these initiatives exemplify the power of technology in creating real change. Dive in to learn more about these groundbreaking efforts and how they are transforming the lives of refugees around the world. Read our blog post

Becoming a Digital Designer

We are thrilled to share the incredible journey of Diana Wambui (or Dee as she is known on the team), our talented Junior Digital Designer, as she celebrates her first year with us at Here I Am. From her remarkable contributions to impactful projects like the WAZZII chatbot and the Fatima website, to her growth in user-centred design and her getting-louder-every-day voice. We are incredibly lucky to have Dee on our team and look forward to watching her flourish in the years to come. Read Dee’s blog post sharing her 12 month journey, and the advice she would give to other young designers joining the sector. Read our blog post

Finally, we’re saddened to see today’s UK news of the decline in the number of girls in England studying for GCSE computing - staggering figures show female students have more than halved in the last decade, in line with the government qualification changes to the GCSE from Information Communication Technology (ICT) to Computer Science. This is a worrying report for the future of women within the tech industry and beyond. As its authors state “The lack of women in computing may lead to heightened vulnerabilities and the dominance of men in shaping the modern world.” If you are a young woman hoping to enter the industry, drop us an email as [email protected] - we’re always happy to offer advice or mentorship to help young women flourish in this sector.

We’ll continue to adapt our newsletters and always welcome any suggestions for improvements. If you enjoy our newsletters, please share them with a friend—they can subscribe to our email list right here.
