A Refreshing Tribute to Water: A Review of “A History of the World in 6 Glasses” on Earth Day

As we celebrate Earth Day, it's fitting to reflect on the words of renowned science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, who once observed, "How inappropriate to call this planet Earth when it is quite clearly Ocean." Indeed, water - the lifeblood of our planet - is the true foundation upon which all of human civilization has been built.

It is in this spirit that I examined Tom Standage 's captivating work, "A History of the World in 6 Glasses." In this book, Standage masterfully explores how six key beverages - beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola - have profoundly shaped the course of human history. Yet, as the author eloquently reminds us in his epilogue, "Back to the Source," the most essential drink of all is water - the very substance that covers the majority of our "Ocean" planet.

Standage's engaging narrative weaves a tapestry that illuminates the profound impact these six beverages have had on the development of cultures and societies around the globe. From the role of beer and wine in the Agricultural Revolution to the global spread of coffee and tea, he deftly demonstrates how each of these "technologies" has catalyzed the interplay between different civilizations.

Yet, as we celebrate Earth Day and reflect on Clarke's insightful observation, it is Standage's tribute to water in the epilogue that truly resonates. He highlights the irony that while these six beverages were once more potable than water, water is now making a comeback as a prized, bottled commodity. However, he also acknowledges that in the developed world, tap water is more regulated, more cost effective, and more environmentally friendly than bottled water, making it a better choice.

Standage's recognition of water's essential role as the foundation of all life is a fitting conclusion to this historical investigation, reminding us of the vital importance of the humble cup and the precious resource that sustains us all.
