Refreshed and Ready: Tips for a Successful Return to Work

Summer's over, and it's back to work.

With 20 years of experience in Demand Generation, Business Development, and Sales, I have learned some effective ways to get back on my feet at work easily after having spent some time off.

Here are some practical ways to get you started on the right foot.

1. Re-set and Re-focus

Ease into your routine: Just don't plunge into work right away. Take a couple of days to get back your momentum. This helps you not feel overwhelmed.

Set achievable goals: Refrain from overloading yourself initially with too much work. Select only those tasks which you are confident that you will be able to accomplish within your first week.

Tackle big stuff first: Identify the most important tasks and jump-start them ASAP.

2. Get Up to Speed

Check the industry news: It is beneficial to be informed about the latest happenings around your trade.

Brush up on skills: You might want to look over and remind yourself of certain major tasks or processes you have been out of for a while.

3. Reconnect with People

Let coworkers and clients know you are back and ready to work through an email or text.

Plan key stakeholder involvement: Schedule one-on-one discussions with those people whose lives will be affected by your new projects or goals.

4. Look after Yourself

Balance work-life: You can't afford to burn out. Take time off and learn how to say no.

Take care of yourself: Find time to take good care of yourself, even if it's very hard to squeeze in.

Now it's your turn! What are your best tips for getting back into the swing of things after a vacation? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Excellent tips, Xoan! I love how you've summarized the key points for getting back to work after vacation. I'd like to add a couple of tricks that have worked really well for me: 1. The "transition day": I always try to come back one day before I tell my colleagues I will. I use this day to catch up on emails, organize my schedule, and make a priority list. It's amazing how much it helps to not feel overwhelmed on the first "official" day! 2. The special coffee technique: I treat myself to a coffee from my favorite cafe on the first day back. It's a small pleasure that makes the return more bearable and gives me an energy boost. 3. Quick team update: I organize a brief informal meeting with my team to catch up on what happened and align expectations for the week. This helps everyone to be on the same page. I really loved your point about taking care of oneself. It's so easy to forget when we dive back into work, but it's crucial for maintaining balance! Thanks for sharing these useful ideas. I'm sure they'll help many of us have a smoother and more productive return to work! Warm regards

What works the most for me is to, plan, organize the space, set goals, reconnect, and prepare everything for my team members so they have all the tools needed to teach. These will help everyone start strong and have a fantastic year.
