U.S. stocks finished mixed on Monday as tech shares climbed ahead of key earnings.

?? DJIA -0.13%, ?? S&P 500 +0.39%, NASDAQ +0.60%

Stocks traded mostly in positive territory on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished lower, while the Nasdaq and S&P 500 finished in the green. All three major indexes finished lower last week.

Tech shares led the advance as shares of EV maker Tesla surged following a report that the Trump transition team wants a federal framework for self-driving vehicles.

After finishing mixed last week, U.S. Treasury yields fluctuated modestly on Monday, with few catalysts impacting trade. Investors returned from last week digesting cautious comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell and strong October retail sales against the future path of the Federal Reserve's rate cuts.

Earnings season continues this week, with 460 companies in the S&P 500 having already reported this quarter as of Friday. Over 76% of these companies have beaten estimates. The earnings highlight of the week will be Nvidia's report on Wednesday.

Trading on Monday:

  • The U.S. 10-year yield fell 1.3 basis points to end at 4.413%.
  • NYMEX WTI crude oil settled 3.19% higher at $69.16 a barrel.
  • COMEX gold rose 1.75%, settling at $2,610.60 t oz.
  • The U.S. dollar declined heading into the New York close. ?

Looking Ahead

Traders attempted to refresh after coming off last week's decline, enabled by reactions to commentary suggesting that the Federal Reserve may be more cautious about cutting interest rates while considering a new presidential administration.

Earnings will be the focus this week, with little on the economic calendar. Nvidia's earnings on Wednesday, along with results from Walmart and Deere, will be important.

As we said last week, investors are weighing the strength of the U.S. economy, a Federal Reserve willing to cut rates cautiously, and a new administration that is pro-growth.

We remain positive on financial markets.
