Reframing the Voyage: Turning Team Negatives into Anchors of Effective Communication

Reframing the Voyage: Turning Team Negatives into Anchors of Effective Communication

One of my favorite quotes, which has profoundly impacted my approach to life and business, goes like this:

"There are always choices there for you. In other words, you can look at the hole in the wall or you can look at the beautiful painting. You can look at the lightbulb that is out, or you can see the lightbulb that is working. You can look at your mate in his positive aspect or you can look at your mate in his negative aspect. You can look at your own body and find something that pleases you or find something that doesn’t. You can remember your childhood and find something of pleasure, or you can find something that makes you feel discouraged. You can remember a compliment, or you can remember somebody down on you. You can remember your love, or you can remember your hate. In other words, you have that choice in every moment.”

– Abraham Hicks

This quote beautifully illustrates the power of reframing our thoughts and perspectives. Let's explore some common negative thoughts your team might encounter and how to reframe them into positive, actionable insights:

  • Negative Thought: "I always fail at new challenges."
  • Reframed Thought: "Each challenge is an opportunity for growth and learning. My past experiences have prepared me to handle new situations effectively."
  • Negative Thought: "I can't handle this workload; it's too overwhelming."
  • Reframed Thought: "This workload is a chance to showcase my time management skills and efficiency. I'll tackle tasks one step at a time and celebrate each accomplishment."
  • Negative Thought: "No one appreciates my contributions at work."
  • Reframed Thought: "My contributions make a difference, even if they aren't always explicitly recognized. I am proud of the impact I bring to the team."
  • Negative Thought: "I'll never be good enough to achieve my goals."
  • Reframed Thought: "While reaching my goals may take time and effort, every step I take brings me closer to success. I am capable of continuous improvement."
  • Negative Thought: "What if I can't answer a question?"
  • Reframed Thought: "It's okay not to have all the answers. Acknowledge when you don't know and commit to finding the information. This shows humility and dedication to accuracy."
  • Negative Thought: "I'm not as successful as my peers; I must be a failure."
  • Reframed Thought: "Success is subjective and personal. My journey is unique, and I have achieved milestones that are meaningful to me. I'm on my own path."
  • Negative Thought: "I can't handle criticism; it means I'm inadequate."
  • Reframed Thought: "Constructive criticism helps me grow and refine my skills. It's a valuable perspective that guides me toward becoming even better."
  • Negative Thought: "I'm stuck in this situation forever; there's no way out."
  • Reframed Thought: "While this situation may be challenging, I have the power to make changes and explore alternatives. I can take steps to create a more positive outcome."

These are common thoughts people cycle through, often shaped by past experiences. As a business owner and leader, it's your job to help your team develop their ability to reframe these thoughts positively. This is one of the key topics I coach and support my clients and their teams with, and it pays off greatly for all parties involved. It boosts confidence within the team members, and at the same time, your clients receive the best service and will keep coming back.
