Reframing with Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Many coaches use a technique called reframing in their coaching practice. Coaches using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) also employ reframing to help change their client's perspective in order to see new options.

In NLP, reframing is a technique that enables you to help your client change the meaning of an internal representation – in other words, it’s the process for giving your client a new perspective in life. Reframing can help enable your client get past the blocks which prevent them from taking action to get the result they want and help change their mindset. NLP purports there are two types of reframing:

  • Context Reframing: In context reframing, you give the client an alternative context whereby their internal representation of behavior will be better served: For example, the client says: "I’m too old, no one will hire me.” As the coach, you could ask, “What is it about your age that can help a company?”
  • Content Reframing: In content reframing, you keep the presenting problem in the same context and change the meaning of it. For example, “I feel bad when I apply for a job and I don’t hear back.” You could ask the client, “What is the meaning you give that when you don’t hear back?” You can ask further questions such as: "What else could this mean? In what way could this be positive?"

Try using NLP reframing with your coaching clients and let me know how it worked.
