Reform Education: From SOX to Smith-Foxx Act?
It is a great honor to co-author this article with my daughter, as our journey together has spanned from K-12, where we fought bullying, sexual misconduct, and abuse of power by school officials. As she marched off to college, I never imagined we'd find ourselves facing yet another battle with school administration. But the moral decay and shady character running our higher education have been revealed, with the same DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) patterns emerging, particularly with the flare-up of antisemitism on campuses. After spending countless hours investigating and learning about antisemitic misconduct, it became clear that these issues run deeper than ever. School officials are experts in cover-ups, exploiting students' vulnerabilities while prioritizing donors' agendas, their own liability, and reputation. In collective terms, this is often referred to as "cash for kids."
Senator Virginia Foxx and her committee, along with the Ways and Means Committee under the leadership of Jason Smith, have exposed corruption within our educational institutions. However, as we find ourselves in a unique moment in history, we must ask: what can we learn from the Enron scandal, reformed with SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act), that Foxx, Smith, and McChon can begin to consider?
Is Congress ready to take the necessary steps to hold educational administrators accountable with imposing personal liability? It's time for a cultural shift. Until leadership is held personally accountable for their role in misconduct and cover-ups, real change remains out of reach.
Read more in our full article, What We Can Learn from Enron: The Case for Educational Reform, where we discuss the need for personal accountability at the highest levels of educational leadership. Without it, misconduct will continue to thrive, unchecked and unpunished.
